There are little ways in which we all try to romanticize our lives. I, for instance, will drink my morning coffee out of an inconveniently small mug because it looks like something out of a French cafe, or I’ll bring a classic novel with me on the train just so I look academic (even thought it ends up sitting in my lap as I scroll on my phone). We should never be afraid to give our day-to-day a little romantic touch.
Take Kate Holmes for instance, who was seen strolling down the streets of New York on Wednesday afternoon with a lush bouquet of flowers in hand, like an Austen character dropped into a modern-day cosmopolitan setting.
While appearing pastoral, Holmes also added a bit of prep, thanks to her blue striped shirt, which was tucked into taupe, high-waisted jeans. It was a fit that felt like something Duchess Meghan might wear—pieces that translate easily from picking veggies in your garden to preparing a luxe gift basket in your kitchen.
If we know Holmes though, she’s always going to add a surprising touch—one that might feel dissonant at first, but ultimately pulls the whole outfit together.

Today, that surprise came in the form of a checkered tote bag from Serapian. Next to the striped shirt, it might have clashed, but trust that Holmes always has an eye for these things. The green strap of her bag ended up winking to the foliage in her hand, and the pattern was different enough from the shirt so as not to be an eyesore.
Meanwhile, she complete the whole look with a set of white ballet flats, and a few dainty chain necklaces, as well as some oversize sunglasses with subtle blue frames.
Seems every time she steps out, Holmes is giving us a new styling technique. Today’s lesson? The next time your outfit needs a little something, try stopping by the nearest florist.
