Kate Middleton and Prince William are meeting lots of locals during their working trip to Scotland, including a child who took center stage for a photo opp!

On April 29, the Prince and Princess of Wales arrived in the town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull to kick off their two-day trip. Prince William, 42, and Princess Kate, 43, are visiting the Scottish Isles of Mull and Iona to celebrate and connect with rural island communities, and April 29 doubled as their 14th wedding anniversary.

The couple arrived at Aros Hall, a local community hub, where one of their first stops was checking out the island’s only soft play area for children.

As photographers followed William and Kate, they also caught a little boy who curiously checked out the cameras. The youngster in a striped top seemingly wandered front and center into the frame at the play place as the royal couple chatted with adults, creating a memorable moment.

Princess Kate is known for her especially warm way with kids, devoting much of her royal work to children’s causes and targeting early childhood development with the Shaping Us campaign.

In another fun snap, Princess Kate, who is affectionately nicknamed the Children’s Princess, made an animated face as she met a little girl at the play area.

The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, as William and Kate are called while in Scotland, are visiting the Scottish Isles to focus on community engagement to promote the power of social connection and the importance of championing the natural environment, causes close to their hearts.

It’s a significant visit for the royal couple as their first joint overnight work trip since Princess Kate’s cancer diagnosis. The Princess of Wales announced in March 2024 that she was receiving treatment for cancer and stayed out of the public eye for most of the rest of the year to focus on her health. She shared in September that she completed chemotherapy and said in January that she is in “remission,” resuming her royal duties since.

William and Kate were in sync in Scotland on their wedding anniversary, with the trip taking them back to the country where they met and fell in love as college students at the University of St. Andrews. They tied the knot on April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey and later welcomed children Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 7.

Princess Kate’s presence by Prince William’s side likely meant much to him, as he previously voiced a wish that she’d be able to resume official travel with him.

“Hopefully Catherine will be doing a bit more next year, so we’ll have some more trips maybe lined up,” the Prince of Wales said in Cape Town, South Africa in November, while abroad for his 2024 Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony.
