NEED TO KNOW

  • Kathryn Hahn’s chaotic audition for How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was a moment that stuck in costar Kate Hudson’s head

  • In a recent interview for Variety, Hudson brought up Hahn’s audition for the part of her best friend Michelle in the 2003 rom-com, calling it “one of the great moments of all time”

  • Hahn confessed how flustered she was since she was meeting the Almost Famous actress for the first time, and she couldn’t find a parking spot, making her late

Kate Hudson says she met her “best friend” the day Kathryn Hahn auditioned for How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

The iconic rom-com made its debut in 2003, starring Hudson as Andie Anderson and Matthew McConaughey as Benjamin Barry. What made the film so unforgettable, in part, was the advice Andie’s friends, Jeannie (Annie Parisse) and Michelle (Hahn), often offered.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was Hahn’s first movie, she told Hudson in an interview published by Variety on June 12. The Bad Moms actress, 51, also confessed to her rom-com bestie exactly how nervous she was to audition, telling Hudson, “I was so sweaty.”

“Do you remember your audition as well as I remember it? Because it was one of the great moments of all time,” Hudson, 46, asked.

The audition included Hudson, producer Lynda Obst, who also produced Sleepless in Seattle and Interstellar, and director Donald Petrie, who also directed Miss Congeniality.

“We were looking for my besties, and you came in, like, all flustered,” the Bride Wars actress said.

The morning leading up to Hahn’s big audition had been a little chaotic, she admitted, not to mention she was meeting Hudson, who had just starred in the Academy Award-nominated film Almost Famous, still a hot topic.

“I couldn’t find a parking spot,” Hahn told Hudson about her reason for being late to the audition. “I was so sweaty. I couldn’t believe I was meeting you, I ran in, in a ruckus, and you were so welcoming.”

Hudson told Hahn that was the moment she knew Hahn would be her best friend.

“You were like everything I think anyone would ever hope and wish for even as they know you now,” Hudson said.

“You came in and you were just like, ‘Oh my God. I’m so sorry. I couldn’t find the parking.’ You had this bag — I don’t even know what was in it; it was like you were traveling — and I immediately was like, ‘I love this woman so much,’ ” Hudson said.

The women tried to remember Hahn’s exact audition scene, believing it was either Michelle’s tearful dialogue in the beginning when she gets broken up with, or when Michelle pretends to be a couples’ therapist for Andie and Benjamin.

Regardless, though, in the middle of the scene, Hudson said Hahn’s Nokia flip phone started ringing.

“She’s like, ‘Oh my God, hold on — I’ve got to go get the phone,’ ” Hudson said, retelling the events while Hahn cracked up. “You get the phone and you’re like, ‘I’m in the middle of an audition.’ ”

While Hahn was taking the phone call, Hudson said she looked over at Obst, gesturing to her that Hahn was perfect to play her best friend.

“This is my best girlfriend in life,” Hudson said.

“Forever,” Hahn replied back.

The person who interrupted Hahn’s big audition was her friend Patrick, and she said she still gives “him crap about it” to this day.

Hudson also poked a little more fun at Hahn for being late to her audition, before saying that it actually worked to her advantage. “It was like, ‘If you don’t remember this hurricane that just entered the room …’ “
