Award-winning children’s authors Kate DiCamillo and Kelly Yang are launching StoryKind, a new podcast designed to inspire creativity and literacy in kids aged 8 and up. The weekly 15-minute episodes will offer writing tips, answer reader questions, and celebrate the magic of storytelling, addressing the decline in literacy among children.

The Podcast’s Mission

StoryKind is a new initiative by Kate DiCamillo and Kelly Yang, two of the most beloved children’s authors, aimed at combating the decline in literacy among children. The podcast, which will release new episodes weekly starting January 19, will focus on writing tips, answering questions from young readers, and celebrating the hard work of teachers and librarians. The goal is to reignite a love for longer stories and inspire kids to explore reading and writing.

Why It Matters

The decline in literacy among children is a growing concern. With the rise of short-form video content, many kids are losing interest in longer, more immersive storytelling. StoryKind aims to bridge this gap by offering a third option: a podcast that combines the engagement of audio storytelling with the depth of literature. This initiative is not just about entertainment but about fostering a lifelong love for reading and creativity.

The Authors’ Vision

Kate DiCamillo and Kelly Yang share a deep concern about the declining literacy rates among children. They believe that storytelling is a powerful tool for connection and creativity. Through StoryKind, they aim to create a platform where kids, parents, and educators can come together to celebrate the magic of storytelling. The podcast will feature bite-sized conversations designed to inspire longer, more immersive storytelling experiences.

“Kelly and I both get a lot of questions from readers — about reading, writing and life,” DiCamillo said in a statement. “We thought it would be good if we could answer some of those questions together, to encourage young writers and readers to tell their own stories. So much of storytelling is a desire for connection, and we thought a podcast would be a way for us all — kids, teachers, librarians — to connect.”

Addressing the Challenge

For Kelly Yang, who has a reluctant reader at home, the challenge of keeping kids engaged with longer stories is personal. She notes that while kids are drawn to short-form video content, the fulfillment that comes from understanding a deeper, more complex story is unparalleled. StoryKind aims to reintroduce kids to the joy of longer storytelling, hoping to inspire them to give reading a chance.

“Unfortunately, right now, there only seem to be two options for most kids — read a book or scroll on YouTube,” Yang said. “We wanted to introduce a third option: a podcast, where kids get to hear two authors tell stories and have silly, fun and meaningful dialogue every week. Hopefully, we’ll get kids interested in longer form storytelling again. From there, the mission is to inspire them to give reading a chance!”

How to Listen

StoryKind will be available on major podcast platforms, including Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Podcasts. Listeners can also follow along on Instagram @storykindpod. The podcast is designed to be accessible and engaging, with each episode lasting just 15 minutes, making it easy for kids to listen and be inspired.

With its focus on creativity, connection, and the magic of storytelling, StoryKind is set to make a significant impact on children’s literacy.
