Former Vice President Kamala Harris has recently been making phone calls to Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom to discuss the anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) riots in Los Angeles, Politico reported Thursday.

Harris, a Los Angeles resident, was not able to reach Newsom over the phone, but left him a voicemail to show support, according to Politico. The report comes after anti-ICE riots broke out across Los Angeles over the weekend, causing President Donald Trump to deploy National Guard troops to the city.

Harris posted a statement to X on Sunday in response to the unrest in Los Angeles, claiming that Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to the city was a “dangerous escalation.”(RELATED: Kamala Harris Spits Out Another Word Salad, This Time Comparing Dems To GOP Symbol)

Harris decided to release the statement about the riots in Los Angeles largely due to the fact that she is a California native and also feels empathetic towards protesters after growing up amid civil rights protests, one anonymous source told Politico.

Harris is reportedly considering whether to launch a bid for California governor in 2026 or run in the 2028 presidential race. The failed 2024 presidential candidate has set a deadline to decide whether to run for governor of California by the end of the summer, Politico reported in March.

“If she [Harris] was worried that her becoming governor might put a bigger target on California, the last week took that question off the table,” one anonymous Harris supporter told Politico. “We’ve got a helluva target on us no matter who the governor is.”

Harris was decisively defeated by Trump in the 2024 presidential election, failing to win all seven battleground states.

Democratic consultant Steve Maviglio told Politico that there will be “enhanced competition” if Harris decides to make a White House bid in 2028. He added that Democrats view Harris as the “most anti-Trump” potential 2028 presidential candidate.

“There’s enhanced competition if she does decide to run for president. That’s a worry, because she’s clearly thinking, ‘Do I want to do that again?’” he said. “On the other hand, it helps her if she runs for governor, because aside from him in the state, she’s viewed as the most anti-Trump candidate.”

Harris’ office and Newsom’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
