The strike, scheduled to conclude at 7 a.m. on October 19, involves approximately 46,000 members of the Alliance of Health Care Unions. Among them are 31,000 members from the United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals (UNAC/UHCP). These professionals, including registered nurses, pharmacists, nurse anesthetists, midwives, physician assistants, and various therapists, are picketing primarily in California, Hawaii, and Oregon at locations such as the Kaiser South Bay Medical Center in Harbor City, Kaiser Woodland Hills Medical Center in the San Fernando Valley, and Kaiser Baldwin Park Medical Center in South Los Angeles.

According to Kaiser Permanente, negotiations for a new national agreement have been ongoing since May, with the company offering a 21.5% wage increase over a four-year period. However, the UNAC/UHCP asserts that Kaiser’s offer fails to address years of wage freezes during periods of record inflation and cuts for new union members. The union emphasizes that these conditions have a tangible, negative impact on daily patient care.

The Alliance initially sought a substantial 38% wage increase but has since revised its demand to 25%. Kaiser Permanente has publicly stated that a 25% wage hike is “out of step with today’s economic realities and rising health care costs.” The company argues that such an increase would significantly inflate its $6.3 billion annual payroll, potentially leading to higher rates for members and customers. Kaiser’s proposed 21.5% offer would already increase payroll for this group by nearly $2 billion by 2029, a point highlighted in statements reported by Reuters.

Conversely, the union points to Kaiser Permanente’s robust financial health. They highlight that the company’s reserves grew from $44 billion in 2021 to an estimated $66 billion in 2024, an increase of $22 billion. The union states that its 25% wage increase request is partly intended to counteract an 18.5% inflation increase that has eroded workers’ purchasing power.
