Joshua Jackson is giving fans an update on how James Van Der Beek is doing amidst his cancer journey.
On the April 28 episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show, the Doctor Odyssey star, 46, shared that the Dawson’s Creek cast has been in touch since Van Der Beek, 48, revealed to PEOPLE in November that he had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer.
The actor noted that Van Der Beek’s cancer diagnosis has “brought the whole gang back together” as he revealed that the costars — which also includes Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams and Busy Philipps, amongst others — now “have a little group text going.”

“The last I heard — it’s not really my story to tell, but — that the latest round of treatment was doing well,” Jackson told host Jennifer Hudson of Van Der Beek. “So he’s doing a little bit better, but it is obviously very, very scary.”
“Yeah, thoughts, prayers and just anything that can be done for him — and his family,” he added, referring to the actor’s six kids who he shares with his wife Kimberly. “He has a large, young family.”

The way the cast has reconnected following his diagnosis is something Van Der Beek has also commented on. In March, he said they’d all been in touch “recently” during an appearance on Jana Kramer’s Whine Down podcast as he revealed they “all went our separate ways” for a while.
“[We] just didn’t speak for years because we’re just living our lives and doing our things,” he said, adding that it’s been “so great” to “just reconnect and be like, ‘Oh, wow. I love who you’ve become.'”

Jackson, meanwhile also recently spoke about how the cast has come back together — and about Van Der Beek’s health — on last week’s episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast, Dinner’s on Me.
“James is going through something really, truly terrible right now. And, I wish I could take credit for this, but I was kind of the absentee partner here, but the girls all got together and were like, ‘We need to do something to help this guy out,'” he told Ferguson.

Jackson also gave an update on who from the cast has stayed the closest over the years — “Busy and Michelle are very, very close. And Katie and I are very close” — as he reflected on the unique bond they formed during the show’s six seasons.
“There is, you know, these moments, these major moments in life [that], other than your husband, there’s probably no other people in your life that you are that forged to. ‘Cause you had to go through good and bad and happy and ‘F— you’ and ‘Don’t talk to me’ and ‘I love you.'”
