Josh Allen ‘Good to Go’ for Bills, Extending NFL’s Longest Active QB Start Streak

Josh Allen will start for the Buffalo Bills in their regular-season finale against the New York Jets, extending his 127-game consecutive start streak — the longest active streak among NFL quarterbacks as Philip Rivers prepares to end his own record-setting run.

Josh Allen is not only playing in the Buffalo Bills’ regular-season finale against the New York Jets — he’s doing so while keeping his 127-game consecutive start streak alive, a mark that now stands as the longest active streak among NFL quarterbacks. The 2024 MVP’s foot injury, which sidelined him from practice Wednesday and Thursday, has been ruled non-serious, with Bills head coach Sean McDermott confirming Allen will be “good to go” for Sunday’s game, though he’ll be limited in his role.

Allen’s injury, which caused him to briefly leave a game last weekend, was not serious enough to keep him out of the lineup. X-rays came back negative, and McDermott emphasized the team’s focus on Allen’s health during his recovery period. “We wanted to make sure his health was No. 1 the last two days. He had two good days of recovery and today he’ll be out there. He’ll be limited. He’ll be good to go for the game, and we’ll take it one day at a time,” McDermott said, as reported by WGR 550.

The Bills, who have already clinched a playoff berth, have little incentive to risk Allen’s health against a 3-13 Jets team. Even if Allen plays only one snap, a Bills win would secure a top-5 seed in the AFC, depending on outcomes in other games. If the Houston Texans and Los Angeles Chargers both lose, Buffalo moves up to the No. 5 seed. If the Texans win and the Chargers lose, the Bills earn the No. 6 seed. The Bills’ playoff seeding is already in their hands — the only variable is whether Allen plays and how much.

Allen’s streak, which began in his rookie season and has endured despite a month-long absence due to an elbow injury, now stands as the longest active streak among NFL quarterbacks. With Philip Rivers planning to sit out his final game against the Texans, Allen’s streak will become the longest active streak in the league. Rivers, who retired at 240 straight starts, will end his run on Sunday, as he returns to the Colts’ roster as a non-starter.

Allen’s streak is second only to Atlanta Falcons offensive tackle Jake Matthews among all active NFL players, who holds 193 consecutive starts. But among quarterbacks, Allen’s 127-game streak places him ahead of the likes of Eli Manning (210 games), Peyton Manning (208 games), and Matt Ryan (154 games). Even Brett Favre’s 297-game record, which spans 1992-2010, remains unattainable — a 170-game gap means Allen would need 10 straight seasons of 17 starts to break it.

The quarterback leaderboard for consecutive regular-season starts now looks like this:

  • Brett Favre (297 games, 1992-2010)
  • Philip Rivers (243 games, 2006-2025)
  • Eli Manning (210 games, 2004-2017)
  • Peyton Manning (208 games, 1998-2011)
  • Matt Ryan (154 games, 2009-2019)
  • Russell Wilson (149 games, 2012-2021)
  • Matthew Stafford (136 games, 2011-2019)
  • Josh Allen (127 games for Bills, 2018-present)

Allen’s streak, which began in his rookie season, has become a symbol of durability and resilience. Even with the foot injury, Allen’s return underscores his importance to the Bills’ identity. His streak is not just a personal achievement — it’s a franchise legacy. The Bills’ front office and coaching staff have prioritized Allen’s health, and the decision to play him — even if limited — reflects their confidence in his ability to lead the team through the final game of the season.

As the Bills prepare for Sunday’s game, the focus will be on Allen’s performance, not his streak. But his 127-game streak — now the longest active streak among NFL quarterbacks — is a testament to his consistency, leadership, and the trust the team places in him. With Rivers ending his run, Allen’s place in the record books is secure — and his legacy as a franchise cornerstone continues to grow.

For fans, Allen’s streak is more than a number — it’s a symbol of his resilience and the Bills’ commitment to his development. Whether he plays 10 snaps or 60, his presence on the field will be a reminder of his value to the team. And for the record books, Allen’s 127-game streak will stand as a testament to his durability — and a reminder that greatness is not just about talent, but about consistency.
