Amazon Prime Video has officially ordered the Biblical drama “Joseph of Egypt” to series, Variety has learned.

Variety exclusively reported the show was in development at the streamer back in June. Production is now underway in New Mexico, with Adam Hashmi (“Bridgerton,” “Criminal Record”) cast in the lead role of Joseph.

The official logline for the series states, “In this iconic Old Testament story, betrayed by jealous brothers, Joseph (Hashmi) defies all expectations and rises to incredible power in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh. But when his past catches up with him, he is confronted with the ultimate test.”

Along with Hashmi, series regulars include Alexander Siddig (“Foundation,” “Shantaram”) as Jacob, Babak Tafti (“Succession,” “Billions”) as Simeon, Daniel Peera (“The Cleaning Lady,” “NCIS”) as Reuben, and Iris Bahr (“Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Svetlana”) as Leah.

The recurring cast members are: Dakota Shapiro (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “Valley of the Boom”) as Ashur, Tannaz Shastiri (“Hacks,” “Ramy”) as Eliuram, Ruben Vernier (“Monsters,” “This Is Us”) as Gad, Amir Malaklou (“The Old Man,” “Your Friends & Neighbors”) as Judah, Moran Atias (“Tyrant,” “Animal Kingdom”) as Bilhah, Necar Zadegan (“Mayor of Kingstown,” “24”) as Zilapah, Matisse Ratron-Neal (“The Night Agent,” “Law & Order”) as Issachar, Shani Atias (“The Pitt,” “Shameless”) as Rachel, and Siya Maleki (“The Bones Exist,” “Kill Me”) as Levi.

Craig Wright is the writer, executive producer, and showrunner. “The Chosen” creator Dallas Jenkins is executive producing via 5&2 Studios. Brad Pelo, Mark Sourian, Ryan Swanson, and Tyler Thompson also executive produce. “Joseph of Egypt” is a co-production between Amazon MGM Studios and 5&2 Studios.

The show falls under Jenkins’ and 5&2’s multi-faceted deal with Amazon MGM Studios, which was announced in February along with Amazon’s acquisition of exclusive U.S. streaming rights to and a theatrical release of new installments of “The Chosen.” In an interview with Variety in September 2024, Jenkins first revealed plans for a Joseph series as well as a multi-season series on the story of Moses.

This marks the latest Biblical series Amazon has been involved with of late. Along with “The Chosen” and now “Joseph of Egypt,” Prime Video currently airs the drama series “House of David.” That show tells the story of King David and premiered in February, earning a second season renewal not long after. “House of David” is produced by The Wonder Project, to which Jenkins serves as a special adviser.
