After 11 years at Loewe, Jonathan Anderson is officially in at Dior. The designer is stepping into the role of Creative Director and will oversee women’s, men’s and couture, presenting his debut collection for Dior men’s on June 27th in Paris. It’s the first time in the house’s history that a single person will oversee all three categories.
In a statement, LVMH Chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault said, “Jonathan Anderson is one of the greatest talents of his generation. His incomparable artistic signature will be a crucial asset in writing the next chapter of the history of the House of Dior.” Delphine Arnault, Chairman and CEO of Christian Dior Couture echoed her father’s statement, noting that she is “convinced he will bring a creative and modern vision to our house, inspired by the fabulous story of Monsieur Dior and the codes he created.”
Indeed, Anderson is the right man for the job when it comes to the possibility for evolving house codes and reinventing new ones. He created a singular design language at Loewe and transformed a once-sleepy Spanish house into a behemoth brand with a loyal following. While it was expected that Anderson would take up this incredibly important role at Dior (he left Loewe in March and last week, Maria Grazia Chiuri announced her departure from Dior), it’s still an exciting move in what’s been a long and winding game of creative director musical chairs. With this major announcement, that game has finally come to an end.
In his own statement, Anderson wrote, “I have always been inspired by the rich history of the House, its depth, and empathy. I look forward to working alongside its legendary Ateliers to craft the next chapter of this incredible story.” There’s no doubt he will. This morning, the designer posted an image to his Instagram showing a Dior tag and a tiny enamel ladybug on a pile of leather four leaf clovers. A sweet sentiment at the beginning of a new journey but truth be told, Anderson doesn’t need good luck charms. He’s made for this role, and he’s got the vision to prove it.
