Johnny Cash‘s legacy is alive and well — and if you need proof, just listen to his grandson, Thomas Gabriel. The eldest grandchild of the Man in Black has fans doing double takes (and double listens) thanks to a viral performance of “Folsom Prison Blues” that sounds eerily like the original.
In a clip uploaded to TikTok, Gabriel’s deep, gravelly tone, steady rhythm, and unmistakable presence don’t just cover the song — they resurrect it. And fans are absolutely here for it.

Commenters flooded the video with praise, with reactions like, “Those genes don’t lie,” “This made my heart skip some beats!” and, “Holy crap. Sounds just like him.” There was also no shortage of heart emojis!
One person even wrote, “Hitting the uncanny valley for me. Can’t accept that that’s not a recording of Johnny’s voice.”
Thomas Gabriel is the eldest child of Kathy Cash, Johnny’s eldest child with his first wife Vivian Liberto Cash.
When he was young, he spent time touring with his grandparents, and obviously picked up a passion for music and performing. Also like his grandfather, he battled addiction and substance abuse, and had a long arrest record. It eventually landed him in prison, but he claims that music helped him recover and work on his debut album, Long Way Home in 2018.
According to his website, Gabriel is now dedicate to “telling his story in an effort to help spread awareness for those battling addiction.” He is currently touring, with shows scheduled in Idaho, Ohio, and Arizona.
