The 2022 PEOPLE’s Best Dressed star, 38, made another glam appearance on the steps of New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, May 5, turning heads in a Burberry look that takes its inspiration from a Belle Époch-era equestrian.
According to a Burberry press release obtained by Town & Country, Turner’s burgundy leather outfit and top hat pay “homage to a portrait of Selina Lazevski, a Black Equestrian who lived during the Belle Époch in Paris and was photographed by Paul Nader in 1891.”
“The coat’s cinched waist and bustle reference the Victorian silhouette captured in Lazevski’s portrait, switching traditional tailoring fabrics for leather embossed with an ornate floral design,” the release continues.
According to another Burberry press release, stylist Law Roach — known for his collaborations with Zendaya — assisted the brand to bring Turner’s whole look together.
“This year’s Met Gala is about Black identity, expression and, importantly, pride. I feel as though I have been building up to this moment my entire career,” Roach said.

In October 2024, Vogue shared details on the 2025 Met Gala, announcing that Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour would be co-chairs for the event, alongside LeBron James as honorary chair.
The gala, which is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on the first Monday in May, is a fundraiser for The Costume Institute and spotlights the museum’s spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” the theme for the gala.
Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton said that the exhibit, which is inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, explores “the Black dandy as both a concept and an identity signifier.”
The exhibit “presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism,” according to a post on the museum’s Instagram.
The Met Gala’s dress code for this year is “Tailored for You,” a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and suiting.

Turner-Smith’s most recent Met Gala appearance was last year, at the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”-themed event.
She arrived in an all-white bodycon gown also by Burberry, styled by Wayman + Micah. Made from tulle and hand-embroidered with ivory silk organza feather flowers, the dress featured a long mesh train and a deep plunging neckline. She embellished with a cross necklace and jeweled bracelet.
Turner-Smith made her debut at the 2022 Met Gala, themed “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” alongside then-husband Joshua Jackson.

The actress wore a sparkly cutout bodysuit by Gucci, with cascading beaded fringe and a halter neckline, as well as a flowy train in a pleated peach fabric. She accessorized with equally sparkly bracelets, rings and earrings and opted for a simple, glowy makeup look.
Jackson, who had attended the gala previously, wore a three-piece Gucci morning suit of gray pants, a navy jacket and vest and a white shirt, and finished the look off with a white bow tie.
The then-couple’s looks were an “old-fashioned interpretation of evening wear,” Turner-Smith told PEOPLE ahead of the event.

Jackson, 46, made a point not telling Turner-Smith what to expect about the Met Gala itself, so she could fully embrace her first time at the event.
“I am just so excited to be there with you as you experience it all for the first time,” the Doctor Odyssey star told her while speaking with PEOPLE.
Turner-Smith later told Elle UK she was experiencing some anxiety at her first Met Gala, but Jackson, from whom she filed for divorce in October 2023, helped her through the nerves.
“When I was doing the Met Gala for the first time, I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, I don’t ever want to do this.’ I didn’t feel good. I was not feeling the vibe,” she said. “I remember there was this moment where my husband just took me by the hand and said, ‘You deserve to be here.’ “
