Oscar-winner Jodie Foster’s latest film, ‘A Private Life,’ sees her taking on her first fully French-speaking starring role, a challenge she prepared for by immersing herself in France weeks before filming. This pivotal role highlights her dedication to authenticity and her growing preference for the creative freedom and collaborative spirit found in European filmmaking over traditional Hollywood productions.

A true icon of cinema, Jodie Foster continues to push artistic boundaries in her illustrious career. The acclaimed actress, known for her powerful performances in films like ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ and ‘Taxi Driver,’ has taken on a challenging new endeavor: her first fully French-speaking starring role in the upcoming psychological thriller, ‘A Private Life’ (also known as ‘Vie Privée’).

This bold move not only showcases her linguistic prowess but also reflects her evolving artistic vision and a growing preference for the distinctive filmmaking environment found outside the United States.

The Rigorous Immersion for ‘A Private Life’

For Foster, mastering her role as an American psychoanalyst living in France meant more than just memorizing lines. She revealed at the New York Film Festival on Sunday, October 5, 2025, that she flew to France “three weeks ahead of time” to completely immerse herself in the language and culture. “I was nervous. I was scared a little bit,” the 62-year-old star admitted, acknowledging the significant challenge of performing entirely in French in a leading capacity.

Her dedication extended to avoiding American friends and “only speak[ing] to French people” during this crucial period. Director Rebecca Zlotowski even shared that she deliberately incorporated a few “Anglicisms” – subtle American curse words – into the script to ensure Foster’s character sounded authentic and not “weirdly French” to an audience, as reported by People.

A Lifelong Francophile’s Dream Realized

Foster’s connection to French culture is long-standing. A self-proclaimed Francophile, she learned fluent French as a teenager while attending the French Lycée in Los Angeles. While she has appeared in a few French films previously, including a minor role in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s ‘A Very Long Engagement’ in 2004, ‘A Private Life’ marks her first time leading an all-French production with extensive dialogue.

This starring role is a dream come true for Foster, who stated, “So it’s something that I’ve been looking for for years, and then I finally found the right role, the right script, and the right director. That all came together.” Her hesitation stemmed from needing strong directorial support, which she found in Rebecca Zlotowski.

Beyond Hollywood: Embracing European Cinema

Foster’s decision to take on ‘A Private Life’ is not just about language; it’s part of a broader artistic shift. She has expressed a strong preference for working outside the United States, particularly in Europe, citing several reasons:

  • Creative Freedom: Foster highlighted that European cinema offers directors more creative authority compared to the US, where producers often hold more sway. She admires how director Rebecca Zlotowski maintained a singular vision for ‘A Private Life,’ comparing her approach to that of David Fincher.
  • Genre Blending: In Europe, there’s greater acceptance for blending genres, something Foster notes is uncommon in the US, where studios typically prefer films to fit neatly into one category like thriller or comedy.
  • Opportunities for Female Directors: Foster, a director herself, pointed out that Europe has a longer tradition of providing opportunities for female directors. She shared a striking statistic, noting that despite making 60 movies, she had only worked with one female director until a few years ago, indicating a significant bias in American filmmaking, as reported by Reuters.
  • Smaller, Collaborative Crews: French sets, in particular, feature smaller crews with individuals often overlapping and performing multiple jobs. This contrasts with the highly specialized roles typically found on American sets, even for independent films, fostering a more intimate and collaborative environment.

Her comfort with European productions is also personal, now that her children are grown, giving her more freedom to pursue projects abroad without being tied down to the US. This newfound flexibility allows her to fully embrace “more character-driven stuff than I’ve done before,” a sentiment she expressed about her career post-60.

‘A Private Life’: The Film at a Glance

In ‘A Private Life,’ Foster portrays an American psychoanalyst residing in France whose meticulously constructed world begins to crumble following the unexpected death of a patient. The film, deeply rooted in the auteur tradition, features an impressive French ensemble cast, including Daniel Auteuil, Virginie Efira, Mathieu Amalric, and Vincent Lacoste.

The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and also had a showing at the New York Film Festival on October 5, 2025, is set to captivate audiences with its nuanced storytelling and Foster’s compelling performance. This pivotal role not only marks a significant milestone in her career but also underscores her enduring commitment to challenging herself and seeking out artistically rich projects.

‘A Private Life’ is scheduled to be in theaters starting January 16.
