Two sisters. One dead husband. One awfully suspicious son.
That’s the pitch proposed by the new trailer for The Better Sister, Prime Video’s upcoming thriller series starring Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks. Adapted from Alafair Burke’s novel of the same name, the show looks like a spiritual successor to Big Little Lies and Gone Girl — like the latter, it features Kim Dickens as an investigator who suspects the murder victim’s family.
The trailer begins with Chloe (Biel) looking in the mirror and systematically tapping herself on the face while trying to make sense of the chaos of her life.
“My husband has been murdered, and my sister is here,” she says as we see flashes of her husband Adam (Corey Stoll) and sister Nicky (Banks). “And though I am feeling anxiety about this, I release it.”
Dickens’ character Nancy narrates the timeline of events. “So you said you left at 8:45, and you came home, put down your things, kick off your shoes, came over here, but you feel something at your feet, and that’s when you see your husband?” she asks as we see Biel’s character step into a puddle of blood inside her home.
Nancy explains her hunch as we see footage of the crime scene. “
Burglary gone wrong has quickly fallen out of the lead for me,” she says. “Someone staged this.”
The trailer then reveals that Nicky was married to Adam before her sister was, and that she’s the biological mother of Chloe’s son, Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan).
“Ethan’s other mom, Adam’s ex — she’s unstable,” someone says of Banks’ character.

As Nancy tells Chloe, “You stole your sister’s life,” we see flashes of a media circus outside of Chloe’s house, and a New York Post article titled “Sister Wife, Double Life: The Shocking Truth About Chloe Taylor.”
“Oh my God, this is everywhere,” Chloe says in response to the article.
Catherine (Lorraine Toussaint) gives advice about how to handle the publicity surrounding the case.
“Grief is something people can connect to,” she says. “And that’s the story you need to tell.”
From there, the trailer turns its focus to Ethan, who seems to be the primary suspect in the investigation. “Alarm was disarmed 20 minutes before Adam was killed,” an investigator says. “Does that make sense to you, Ethan?” Nancy asks.
“You’re asking him to put himself in the mind of his father’s killer?” Chloe suggests.

“Wake up, Chloe! They think Ethan killed his father!” Nicky tells her sister.
Michelle (Gloria Reuben), who appears to be a lawyer, then asks the siblings to come clean. “Whatever’s happened between you two in the past, Ethan is in real trouble now,” she says. “You wanna protect him — tell me everything.”
The trailer then shows brief flashes of an intense scene involving Adam in a swimming pool, a shot of someone tearing down police tape inside a house, Nicky pouring a bucket of water or cleaner onto a puddle of blood, and Chloe throwing away a cell phone at the beach.

“Your life is s—ty because it is built on the bad decisions that you have made,” Chloe tells her sister.
Nicky shoots back, “Your life is a lie!”
Bill (Matthew Modine) utters the trailer’s final line: “Sometimes we dig. We don’t like what we find.”
The trailer concludes with a shot of security holding back a horde of photographers at a courthouse as the sisters head inside.
