Jennifer Lopez, 55, Says She’s Over Method Dressing: “I Want to Feel More Original”

When I think of Jennifer Lopez’s fashion sense, glitz, glamour, bedazzled, and maximalism are all words that come to mind. The multi-hyphenate has always been known to make a statement with her style choices, and now, the 55-year-old tells me that’s by design.

“I want to always feel more original,” she tells InStyle. Despite years of dressing on theme for her projects—bridal looks for Marry Me, a zodiac dress for This Is Me…Now, and bombshell glam for Hustlers—she’s leaving method dressing in the past.

“I did that for so many years with my films and now it’s kind of to a level where it almost becomes a costume. I’m not into that with fashion,” Lopez explains. “I think the key is to always authentically be yourself and [do] what feels good to you in the moment, whether that’s something that’s older that you’ve done before, and classic, or something that’s totally new. It just has to feel right for me right now.”

That’s exactly Lopez’s approach going into her hosting gig on May 26 at the 2025 American Music Awards. It will mark her second time leading the awards ceremony (she first hosted the AMAs in 2015), and she teased that this time, she will not be putting her style in a box.

“I’m obviously going to be glam,” she says. “Some glam, some cool, some chic and elegant, and some sexy, too. All the things that you associate with me and fashion.”

We’ll have to wait until Monday to see what those looks are, but you can expect to see her rocking a little bit of everything.

“When it comes to fashion, it’s like, Which sides of myself [do I want to show]? [We have] so many different ideas,” she says. “We could just go very avant-garde and modern, classic and elegant, or sexy. There’s just all different types of things that we can play with, and I think we’re just going to run the gamut of what feels best.”
