Season 2 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives picks up with Jen and Zac Affleck as they struggle with their marriage
The couple is exploring different methods to heal their relationship, including ketamine therapy

Jen and Zac Affleck are exploring every avenue for healing their marriage.
In the first episode from season 2 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, the MomToker and her husband, who are struggling through a separation, explore ketamine therapy as a means of healing.
“Zac and I will definitely have a lot to work on, and ketamine therapy is supposed to reset a lot of past traumas or habits you’ve created,” Jen explains in a confessional.
Ketamine is a “dissociative anesthetic that has some hallucinogenic effects,” per the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. It “distorts the perception of sight and sound and makes the user feel disconnected and not in control,” and “can induce a state of sedation (feeling calm and relaxed), immobility, relief from pain, and amnesia.”
Ketamine was approved as a short-acting anesthetic by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the 1970s. And in 2019, the Food and Drug Administration approved a nasal spray called esketamine, derived from ketamine, as a medication for depression. Ketamine therapy is a treatment that uses low doses of the drug in order to manage various mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Acknowledging that people might have feelings about a member of the Mormon Church trying such unconventional methods, Jen says, “Ketamine is in the gray area when it comes to the church.”
“Yeah, the church doesn’t promote ketamine, but it’s definitely not like a commandment exactly,” she notes, appreciating the fact that Zac is open to the idea.
“Ketamine is a pure example of how much he’s willing to do to show up for the relationship,” Jen concludes.

The couple shows up at a facility, where they are each set up in a recliner-style chair and made comfortable before they are given a dose.
The professional exits, leaving the couple to chat. “Never thought we’d get to this point where we’d be doing drugs together,” Jen laughs.
She loses focus for a second before sharing, “Oh, it hit me. It’s hitting me right now. The room is spinning.”
Adjusting her headphones and pulling down her face mask, she says, “That was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”
She then asks Zac, “Will you come cuddle next to me when you’re done?” He agrees.
An hour later, their IVs were removed, and Zac moves over next to Jen and hugs her.
“I’ve just had some memories of when we first started dating. I truly felt like you were like my missing piece,” she tells him.
“When we were in Hawaii, when we were like running through the coffee fields, I was thinking, I was like,” he pauses, starting to cry. He continues, “I would literally give anything in the world to relive that.”
Jen starts to cry harder, saying, “I just want to be happy again.”
In a confessional, Zac says, “Jen and I do love each other, and we are a team. It’s easy when you get back to the root of why you love each other, being able to relive some of those memories and think about some of those times I’ve had with Jen… yeah, I just kind of realized just how special she is to me.”
Jen tells Zac through tears, “A month before I met you, I remember sitting down and praying to God to find my person. And he led me to you.
“I want to fight for you, and I will always fight for you,” he tells her.
