House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday teased a project from House Democrats, outlining a “blueprint for a better America” as President Trump marks 100 days in office — but being sure to note it will not be about the president.
“Over these next 100 days, House Democrats are going to lay out a blueprint for a better America. And you will see a vision for this country’s future that isn’t about Donald Trump. It’s all about you,” Jeffries said. “How can we make your life better? How can we put more money in your pocket? How can we lower your costs?”
He announced the project during a speech railing against the first 100 days of the Trump administration, calling it a “debacle” and pledging that Democrats will “continue to push back aggressively.”
“Donald Trump and the Republicans have given us 100 days of chaos, 100 days of cruelty, and 100 days of corrupt behavior. That is not constructive leadership. It is a recipe for disaster,” Jeffries said.
“Our message to the American people is simple: We hear you, we see you, we feel you, and Democrats are determined to make life better for you.”
Jeffries pointed to some bright spots for Democrats over the last several months.
A Democratic candidate won in Republican-leaning state legislative districts in special elections in Pennsylvania. And despite billionaire Trump adviser Elon Musk spending tens of millions on a Wisconsin Supreme Court race, the liberal candidate won “by double digits,” Jeffries noted.
Jeffries called Republicans “spineless” for not doing more to push back on Trump.
His speech marking Trump’s first 100 days is just the latest major messaging action from the Democratic minority leader. Over the weekend, he led a “sit-in” with Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) on the steps of the Capitol, voicing opposition to the sweeping budget legislation Republicans are working on that will encompass Trump’s top legislative priorities — which Democrats fear could include sweeping cuts to Medicaid.
“We will continue to push back aggressively,” Jeffries said in his speech on Wednesday.
