Some performers love the idea of method acting, while others can’t stand working with anyone who insists on diving into their character with such unwavering dedication.
Fortunately with the upcoming film Tron: Ares, the iconic Jeff Bridges held a generally more forgiving view of the notorious acting style, as seen through his unorthodox working relationship with co-star Jared Leto.
According to Tron’s cast and crew, Leto – who remains well-known for his dedication to method acting – insisted on fully embodying his film’s character, right down to being called “Ares” on set.
Rather than expressing frustration or reluctance to accept Leto’s method acting style, the 75-year-old Bridges instead honored his co-star’s wishes, developing a unique rapport with Leto during filming.
“He’s one of those guys. Everyone has different methods and modes, man,” Bridges observed during the Tron: Ares panel at last week’s San Diego Comic-Con.
“I didn’t want to offend him as a thespo,” Bridges went on to say, before turning directly to Leto. “But I thought, ‘I wanted to have a certain intimacy with you. I know your name is Ares. Can I just call you Air?’ He said, ‘Yeah, man! You can call me whatever you want!’ We had a great time.”
After hearing this, Leto promptly returned the sentiment, discussing his starstruck reaction to his first scene on Tron: Ares with The Big Lebowski actor.
“I just blurted out, ‘Cut!’ Everyone was surprised, because I don’t often do that,” Leto said. “The first AD comes over and said, ‘Is everything OK? What’s wrong?’ And I said, ‘You know, I just can’t stop smiling, because I’m working with my guy.’”
Tron: Ares marks the long-awaited third entry in Disney’s Tron universe. A continuation of 1982’s Tron and 2010’s Tron: Legacy, the film follows Leto’s A.I. character, Ares, as he ventures from the digital world of his creation into the real world, leading him to interact with humanity for the first time in his existence.
