  • Jana Kramer is speaking out about ‘Bachelor’ alum Madison Prewett’s recent controversial comments

  • The country singer and actress said she doesn’t agree with Prewett and her husband’s comments about spanking their baby daughter

  • Kramer said her opinion comes from being spanked herself

Jana Kramer is sharing her thoughts on whether she’d spank her kids.

On a Monday, Aug. 11 episode of her podcast Whine Down with Jana Kramer, the country singer and actress, 41, spoke with her co-hosts about Bachelor alum Madison Prewett’s recent comments regarding spanking her baby daughter, Hosanna.

Kramer and her co-hosts, Kristen Brust and Kathryn Woodard, first played the video in which Prewett and her husband Grant Troutt share that it would be “hilarious” when they started using spanking as a way of punishing their daughter. Prewett and Troutt also referenced their religion and shared that the Bible tells them to discipline their kids with corporal punishment.

“It’s just wild to automatically assume they’re going to have to spank this child,” says Brust. “We talked about our views at home — Preston and I — but I never assumed I’d have to spank [my daughter].”

“It’s a strange thing. I’ve never forward thought about hitting my kid, I guess,” she continues.

Woodard admits that she has spanked her kids in the past, but shares that it didn’t work. Even though she explains she’s not necessarily against spanking, Woodard says that she doesn’t like the way Prewett and her husband speak of spanking.

“It should never be out of anger,” Woodard says. “We learned very quickly with all of ours that it didn’t really work. So I would say all of our kids probably were spanked at one point or a like a little pop, I don’t even know if it’s a spank.”

“And it’s hard for me to hear you say, ‘We don’t plan [on] hitting our kids.’ I don’t like hearing that,” she continues. “That gives me a negative…like I’m not hitting my kids. But everyone feels differently about that.”

“I’m not against it, but I don’t like that clip,” adds Woodard.

In the clip, Troutt says “The Lord’s discipline is always off the heels of disobedience or sin. So think about it, when you have a child, you don’t just discipline them for being good and obeying you, right?”

“Like, if Hosanna obeys us, we’re not like, ‘Come here girl, come here. Alright, pull ’em down, get that, you know, Mama, get here,’ ” continued Troutt. “Which will be hilarious, by the way, when we start spanking Hosanna. Which we will, on the record, because the Bible clearly says, ‘Folly is bound up in a child, but discipline drives it far away.'”

Kramer explains that since she was spanked in the past, she doesn’t like to use it as a type of discipline on her kids. She also adds that she’s particularly angered by Troutt’s tone during the clip.

“I think there are other ways to discipline,” Kramer explains. She continues and says that for her, the part she can’t get over is how “joyful” Troutt sounds.

“What rubs me is the ‘which we will’, like that joyful like, ‘it’ll be hilarious when we do, which we will by the way’ kind of being like, he was already going after the haters that were gonna hate on him about it,” Kramer says. “It was almost like it was a proud, ‘And which we will.'”

“That’s what rubs me because, and again, I associate it with something with my negative past of things, and I don’t think you should ever be joyful about hitting,” she explains.

The One Tree Hill alum also shares that she doesn’t understand where in the Bible Troutt and Prewett are seeing that God is telling them to spank their daughter.

“They are believers just as we are, and they are looking into the Bible and into the book,” Kramer says, adding that she still questions things in the Bible, which her pastor tells her is “where faith comes in.”

“And I think in this area, that’s where I would go, ‘I don’t think God wants us to take a rod and hit our kids,” she continues. “I don’t understand where they’re taking the scripture and going, ‘Okay, well, because God said this, do this. And it’s like, ugh. The rod can be your tone.”

According to a 2019 statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics, corporal punishment should not be used as a method to discipline children.

The follow-up advisory — published 20 years after its “Guidance for Effective Discipline” said parents should “be encouraged” not to use spanking for punishments — doctors noted that “there appears to be a strong association between spanking children and subsequent adverse outcomes.”

The Academy’s guidelines now strongly oppose using spanking as a method of discipline by listing the consequences of doing so, broken down by age group. For example, children younger than 18 months old have a higher risk of physical injury, while it can lead to mental-health issues down the road.
