James Carville Calls On Dems To ‘Save Democracy’ By Taking Radical Measures To Game System

Democratic strategist James Carville on “Politics War Room” Wednesday pushed his party to resort to drastic measures to game the system in their favor to “save democracy.”

Democrats have vehemently opposed Texas’ redistricting plan that could net Republicans up to five seats in the United States House of Representatives, arguing the proposed map could threaten democracy. Yet Carville said in a Politicon YouTube video that the Democrats should go well beyond redistricting if they secure unified control of the federal government in 2028. “[T]he Democrats talk about democracy … and preserving democracy and saving democracy — well, the truth of the matter is, people are right when they say this democracy is really imperfect,” Carville said. “And they’re going to have to do — if the Democrats win the presidency, the Senate and the House in 2028 … they are just going to have to unilaterally add Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia as states.”

“The Constitution gives Congress power over federal elections. I don’t think they’re going to redistrict, but … they’re going to have to do it. They’re just going to have to do it,” he added. “And they may have to expand the Court to 13 members. Any of those things in isolation, I would be skeptical about, I would be cautious about, I would say, ‘Well, I don’t know if that’s the greatest idea in the world. You’re opening Pandora’s box.’”

However, Carville said he believed it was necessary to “do all of those things” in order to “save democracy.”

Only 29% of Americans back increasing the number of Supreme Court justices, according to a 2024 poll by the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania.

Despite former President Joe Biden campaigning in 2024 on President Donald Trump being a threat to democracy, undecided swing-state voters trusted Trump over Biden on the issue, according to a June Washington Post-Schar School poll featuring “decider” voters from six swing-states.

Moreover, the Democratic Party faced backlash for the process in which former Vice President Kamala Harris became the presidential nominee in 2024. She secured enough support from Democratic delegates to become the party’s presumptive nominee in July 2024, despite garnering virtually no primary voter approval.

Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders also agreed with comedian Akaash Singh on “Flagrant” in May that the Democratic Party was “a threat to democracy,” based on its presidential primary process.

“I’m not going to argue with that point,” Sanders said. “And that’s why I’m proudly an independent.”
