It took 20 years, but now we finally know the true — and creepy — meaning behind James Blunt’s ballad, “You’re Beautiful.”
On Friday, the British singer celebrated the 20th anniversary of his hit song by admitting what the lyrics are really about… and it’s a lot less romantic than what you may have thought.
“20 years ago today, I released a song that bought me this house,” Blunt said in a video posted on X of him walking through his front door. “Whoever thought a song about being high as a kite on drugs, stalking someone else’s girlfriend, would resonate quite so much?”
Blunt ended his message with a simple “thank you” to his fans. “You guys are beautiful,” he added.

Blunt’s breakout song “You’re Beautiful” was first released on May 30, 2005. It was the third single from his album, Back to Bedlam, which came out in October 2004. “You’re Beautiful” dominated the charts, hitting No. 1 in 10 countries.
It’s never been confirmed who Blunt wrote the song about, but he opened up about why he got inspired to write it in a 2020 essay for The Guardian.
“One day I was on the underground in London and saw an ex-girlfriend with her new boyfriend,” he wrote at the time. “Our eyes met, but we just walked past each other, and I went home and wrote the words to ‘You’re Beautiful’ in two minutes.”
Blunt explained that he was shocked to see how people romanticized the song: “It’s always been portrayed as romantic, but it’s actually a bit creepy.”
The singer also remembered how he was forced to change the lyrics about how “high” on drugs he was.

“The label asked me to remove the words ‘f—ing high’ from ‘You’re Beautiful,'” he said. “I tried ‘particularly high,’ ‘especially high!’ Eventually I sang ‘flying high’ on the radio edit but wanted the released version left as it was. I told them, ‘I was f—ing high!'”
In 2014, Blunt admitted that he started to get annoyed by his own breakout song.
“There was one song that was force-fed down people’s throats, ‘You’re Beautiful,’ and it became annoying,” he said at the time. “The marketing also painted me as an insanely serious person, an earnest person, and — as all my friends know — I’m anything but. I have a couple of over-emotional miserable songs that I’m known for, but I think it’s turned that corner now.”
