Adam Sandler’s outfit staples consist of oversized button T-shirts, hoodies and shorts, yet he somehow takes monopoly over his and wife Jackie Sandler’s shared closet with one single item in their wardrobe.
The Happy Gilmore 2 star spoke with PEOPLE exclusively for the movie’s New York City premiere on Monday, July 21, and confirmed that his side of the closet takes up more space than his wife’s.
“[Jackie] said she’s so proud of you, but that you take up way too much room in the closet with your shoes,” PEOPLE told the actor, 58, on the red carpet for the event.

Sandler replied, “She did say that. Yeah, I know. That makes sense.”

Elsewhere during Sandler’s press tour for Happy Gilmore 2, he revealed that Jackie — despite wishing his shoes took up less closet space — has never had any issue with the way that he dresses, even when others insisted that he styled himself in a way that would complement her during their high-profile outings.
The comedian spoke with Complex and was asked how it felt to “unintentionally kind of become a style icon” to fans of his movies. He also shared Jackie’s feelings about his preferred way of dressing.

“It’s funny as hell,” the Uncut Gems star said of his style icon status. “And whenever one of my kids or their friends talks to me about it… my wife’s like, ‘What the hell are we talking about right now? How did that happen?’ “
“But my wife [Jackie] always was nice to me about my clothes,” he added. “Even when we were young, others would say, ‘Would you put on something better than that? Your wife’s dressed so beautifully.’ My wife would say, ‘He’s comfortable like that. Let him do that. Leave him alone.’ “

In recent years, Sandler has gone viral for his relaxed approach to fashion, which gave rise to the “Sandlercore” or “Madam Sandler” trends on TikTok.

Speaking with PEOPLE in August 2024, he explained that the trend was “accidental” and that he was unsure how to feel about it.
“But here I am wearing goofy clothes, and I don’t know. I don’t think about it,” he said, adding that he approves of the people who dress in “Madam Sandler” aesthetic, a style focusing on comfy silhouettes and often incorporating the actor’s signature oversized shirts and shorts.
Jackie and Sandler’s two daughters, Sunny and Sadie Sandler, also star in Happy Gilmore 2. The film arrives on Netflix on July 25.
