Former Democratic strategist Dan Turrentine and former White House press secretary Sean Spicer criticized the Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Tuesday for posting a photo of former Vice President Kamala Harris at the Met Gala on its X account.
The DNC posted the photo of the former vice president in her outfit for the glitzy fundraiser, with the caption “Kamala Harris stuns at the Met Gala.” Turrentine and Spicer, on “The Morning Meeting,” agreed it was poor messaging by the Democratic Party. “We are always happy to have her here in New York, but I don’t know what she was doing. I mean, well, I do, but I don’t see how this helps her,” Turrentine said. “On some level, it’s as silly as the White House retweeting [President Donald] Trump as the Pope. Like why is the DNC tweeting her at the Met Gala? It doesn’t really help the party. She likes to hobnob with wealthy people in the arts.”
Host Mark Halperin pushed back by noting President Donald Trump is a billionaire who associates with other billionaires, but Turrentine said his point did not hold weight.
“Trump’s base, his strength, is the working class. Kamala’s Achilles’ is she is seen as out of touch and elitist … Nothing is more out of touch and elitist than the Met Gala,” the former Democratic strategist said. “And so, look, I mean, I don’t think anyone ultimately cares, but like as she’s inching back into the public square, into the public spotlight, probably not the best look for her to be at the Met Gala.”
“The bottom line is, you want to reenter politics, whether it’s governor of California or as the potential Democratic nominee, and the DNC is tweeting that out like somehow that’s — like it’s one thing if she does it,” Spicer said. “It’s another thing if the new chairman thinks that that’s a smart message for them. I mean, I could not be happier.”
NBC News national political correspondent Steve Kornacki noted in December that Trump won white voters without a college degree by 34%.
“This is over 3,100 counties and you think of those demographic divides, Trump cleaning up with blue collar voters, voters, you know, white voters without college degrees,” he said. “You see that in a lot of rural areas, a lot of small population counties all over the country. Look at all of that red.”
Meanwhile, Kornacki said Democrats performed well among college-educated voters in both the suburbs and urban areas.
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough also said Tuesday that Democrats spent a long time creating the perception that they were “elitist,” helping Republicans portray them as out of touch.
“I mean, the greatest irony of all is you’ve got all these Ivy League billionaires, who actually Americans believe they understand how they live more than Democrats, who have been successfully painted, and I will say over the past 30-40 years, have painted themselves into the corner of being elitists,” Scarborough said. “So much of this has to do with personality.”
“We always talk about a focus group we saw in 2016… where a working-class, blue-collar woman, you know, asked why she’s supporting Donald Trump, she said, ‘Because he’s one of us,’” he continued. “‘Because he’s one of us.’”
