With biographical films about musicians’ lives getting so much attention lately, many fans would love to see a biopic on the whirlwind life of country legend Willie Nelson. He, however, isn’t ready for the A Complete Unknown treatment just yet.
“I’ve heard some talk about it,” he told AP when asked whether he’d like to see a film made about his life, like his friend Bob Dylan. “But I’m not through with it yet.”
Nelson considers the A Complete Unknown subject to be “a good friend,” and the duo is even hitting the road together beginning June 20, 2025, for the second leg of the Outlaw Music Festival.
“I’ll be glad to let [Dylan] headline,” he said. Also featured at the event will be Billy Strings, Sheryl Crow, and Nathaniel Ratecliff & The Night Sweats.
Dylan’s biopic, A Complete Unknown, was released in 2024 and featured Timothée Chalamet portraying a young Dylan living through his early folk music success and controversy surrounding his use of electric instruments.
The film is based on Dylan’s life, but much of it is fictionalized for the camera, including one scene suggested by the rocker himself. “[Dylan took] obvious pleasure in obfuscation and distortion,” actor Edward Norton, who played Pete Seeger in the film, shared with Rolling Stone. “He’s such a troublemaker.”
The film went on to be nominated for several Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards and even took home a Screen Actors Guild Award for Chalamet’s performance.
Though fans would love to see Nelson get the same treatment, they’re going to have to wait until he’s ready. However, those who want to know more about Nelson’s life are in luck; he did release two memoirs already, the first titled Willie: An Autobiography in 1988, and a second in 2015 called It’s a Long Story: My Life.
