For those who are unfamiliar, four-time GRAMMY Award-winner and 17-time GRAMMY Award-nominee Ed Sheeran has previously teased a transition to country music. From the way things sound, his country debut might be a duet with the one and only Megan Moroney. How wild is that?
Earlier this year, Sheeran shocked Nashville residents as he took a tour around Music City, performing surprise pop-up shows at Robert’s Western World, Santa’s Pub, The Bluebird Cafe and more. As if teaming up with fellow genre-bending artist Noah Kahan at Santa’s Pub wasn’t exciting enough, country music lovers were stunned when Sheeran stepped out for a set with Moroney at The Bluebird Cafe.
“One day you’re singing on your apartment floor in Nashville & no one really cares that much & then you blink & you’re at The Bluebird playing with Ed Sheeran (🥹😭🫶🏼),” she captioned a clip of the performance, shared via TikTok.
Now, Moroney is spilling the tea once and for all, sitting down with Katie Neal at Audacy to spill how their pop-up performance came to be, as well as what the future holds for Moroney and Sheeran as a duo.
“I was supposed to go on vacation that weekend to the beach, and I got a call saying that Ed Sheeran wanted me to play with him at The Bluebird on a Sunday night,” the Georgia native prefaced, explaining that it was an opportunity she just couldn’t pass up. “I was like, ‘Well, I won’t be going on vacation. You don’t tell Ed Sheeran no.'”
“I had never met him before or anything, so I thought it was like a joke,” she recalled with a chuckle, but after speaking with his team, Moroney learned that Sheeran is “such a fan,” so much so that he knew all the lyrics to her songs that she performed at The Bluebird Cafe that evening. How wild is that?
After reminiscing on the oh-so special day, Neal then asked Moroney if she and Sheeran plan to work together again anytime soon, to which she swiftly replied, “We email — he doesn’t have a phone — but he’s stayed in touch. He’s on the list now of my dream collaborators. I think that would be really cool. I saw that he said he wanted to come to country so I was like, ‘Email me back!'”
She continued, “I’ve been really inspired by Ed Sheeran’s stuff, so I would love to do a song with him… This is not me teasing anything,” naturally sending fans into a frenzy.
Admitting that the “Lego House” singer is now “on the list now of [her] dream collaborators,” Sheeran joins none other than Justin Bieber, who she claimed to be her “dream collab” while speaking with Billboard on the red carpet at the 2025 ACM Awards. “Outside of country music — I’ve been trying to put this out here enough times that maybe he’ll come across one of these videos — but Justin Bieber. Call me,” she said at the time.
Telling Neal that Kenny Chesney is the only confirmed collaborator on her next album — with their recent summer smash “You Had To Be There” — could she whip up a tune with Either Sheeran or Bieber in time?
