How vapor chambers workiPhone 17 and the A19 chipBenefits for iPhone users

Apple is reportedly implementing vapor chamber cooling on some iPhone 17 models. That may sound like a rather insignificant upgrade, but with Apple wanting to squeeze more and more performance out of its iPhone chips in the era of Apple Intelligence, vapor chamber cooling will be meaningful.

How vapor chambers work

Vapor chambers are a far more effective method of passive cooling. In short, vapor chambers contain a small level of liquid that evaporates when the chipset gets too hot. That vapor then travels to the walls of the chamber, where it then condenses, reducing the temperature of the chipset.

In comparison, traditional metal heatsinks just absorb a lot of heat, but once they’re at full capacity, the chipset has to throttle down to allow heat to escape. Vapor chambers allow chipsets to run at higher capacity for much longer, since thermal throttling becomes less of a concern.

Some Android phones, like the Pixel 9 Pro and Galaxy S25 Ultra, have already adopted vapor chamber cooling. Anecdotally, many users say it helps out with gaming performance, allowing their phones to effectively never get hot or drop frames.

iPhone 17 and the A19 chip

Apple’s entire iPhone 17 lineup will adopt the A19 family of chips. They’re expected to be built on TSMC’s third-generation 3nm process, N3P. TSMC’s N3P process will provide a roughly ~5% performance gain at the same power level compared to N3E.

With year-over-year performance gains continually shrinking, adopting a vapor chamber to maximize performance makes a lot of sense. Reputable leaker Instant Digital on Weibo reports that both iPhone 17 Pro models will contain vapor chambers for more consistent peak performance:

Confirmed: both the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will use vapor chamber cooling. The Pro model doesn’t have any compromises. Combined with the A19 Pro’s improved thermal management, performance under heavy load remains consistent without throttling.

Supply-chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, on the other hand, believes it’ll only be available on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Chinese site MyDrivers has previously reported that all iPhone 17 models will receive vapor chamber cooling.

Whether it’s just the Pro Max, both Pro’s, or the whole lineup, vapor chamber cooling is something that you should look forward to.

Benefits for iPhone users

For a long time, it felt like A-series chipsets were becoming a bit overkill in iPhones. However, with Apple Intelligence running all models on-device, Apple has definitely been taking advantage of all of the performance at hand. With vapor chamber cooling, it’ll likely be plausible for Apple to run more intense models on iPhones without having to worry about overheating.

Of course, looking at this from an AI perspective would require that Apple actually gets its AI development in order. However, Apple Intelligence aside, vapor chamber cooling should allow for better gaming performance on iPhone.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows recently released on Mac, and will later be coming to iPad models as well. It currently is not available on iPhone, but with the performance of A19 Pro, as well as better sustained thermals, it could become a possibility. Overheating iPhones could also become a thing of the past.
