Following the release of iOS 18.4 earlier this month, iPhone users reported several different connectivity problems with CarPlay. Now, Apple has released iOS 18.4.1, which includes a fix for at least one of the reported CarPlay problems…
iOS 18.4.1 and CarPlay
As a recap, iPhone users reported various CarPlay problems after updating to iOS 18.4. Some users had issues with wireless connectivity, the Music app, second screen integration, and more. The problems spanned multiple carmakers, including Honda, Mazda, Audi, and Ford. As we reported at the time:
Perhaps more importantly, however, some users are experiencing major connectivity problems with CarPlay in iOS 18.4. One user says their iPhone is “connecting and disconnecting over and over again” when using wireless CarPlay. Another user also says that iOS 18.4 “broke” their wireless CarPlay and made the connection “unstable.” One Honda driver says it “takes plugging and unplugging 5+ times or restarting the car to get CarPlay to connect” since updating to iOS 18.4.
I took a road trip last weekend and had these problems with CarPlay in my Ford Mustang Mach-E. For example, I had several instances where wireless CarPlay refused to connect. The “Now Playing” widget and interface also stopped working multiple times. There were also multiple times when the volume level randomly fluctuated between songs. When on the road for over 1,000 miles, the problems were certainly frustrating.
Whether or not iOS 18.4.1 fixes all of these problems remains to be seen. Apple’s release notes only reference “a rare issue that prevents wireless CarPlay connection in certain vehicles.”
