Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid) is ready to rock. You might even say he’s … H-O-T-T-O-G-O.
Interview With the Vampire gets a major vibe shift in season 3 when the Brat Prince becomes a rock star to tell his side of the story after his less-than-stellar portrayal in Louis du Pointe de Lac (Jacob Anderson) and Daniel Molloy’s (Eric Bogosian) book — as he does in Anne Rice’s beloved second novel The Vampire Lestat. As a result, series star Reid tells Entertainment Weekly that he sings “quite a lot” in the new season, and that one of Lestat’s songs has a surprising pop star inspiration.
“[Composer] Daniel Hart did tell me a couple of months ago that he spent an entire week listening solely to Chappell Roan, and I think there’s probably a song that feels quite like her,” Reid teases in EW’s Comic-Con video suite on Friday. “He’s written earworms.”
Reid adds that transforming into a rock star this season (which is currently in production) has been “really fun.”
“The music came first, which is an odd way to go about a show that is so dialogue-heavy,” Reid continues. “It was an interesting shift to go from very complicated, wildly structured sentences to melody and more simplified verses that made up music. I kind of flailed around and screamed around for a while.”
Showrunner Rolin Jones explains that season 3 is not a musical, but it will be music-heavy.
“What you didn’t want is songs just dropped in,” Jones says. “Quite often, we would build scenes and story arcs around songs that Daniel wrote and said, ‘I think Lestat would have sang this’ … He’s on a rock tour, so songs will be sung. A lot of them are on-camera performed, and then a lot of them are tied to memories that we have, and sometimes we get super weird with them. And sometimes they’re wallpaper, too, for storytelling.”
Reid promises that rock star Lestat is going to be worth the long, long wait after it was first teased at last year’s Comic-Con.
“You’re going to get what you want, pretty quick,” he says. “We’re doing the real thing.”
But did he get it from his mama? Lestat’s mother Gabrielle will debut this season, and just like her son, she’ll make a huge splash when she arrives on the scene.
“It affects him greatly,” Reid says of Gabrielle’s return to his life. “She’s definitely here.”

“If you know, you know,” Anderson teases.
While the stars are tight-lipped about Gabrielle’s arc, the showrunner had a little more to say.
“She’s coming in like an asteroid in season 3,” Jones reveals. “She’s about to destroy everything in her wake.”
Like mother, like son.
