With its latest AI chip revelations, including the advanced Crescent Island GPU and Gaudi 3 systems, Intel is battling to carve out significant market share against dominant rivals like Nvidia, signaling a pivotal moment in its multi-faceted strategy to reclaim leadership in both data center and PC segments.

Intel (INTC) is making a monumental push into the artificial intelligence (AI) chip market, unveiling new data center offerings and outlining an ambitious strategy to compete with industry giants like Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD (AMD). This intensified focus on AI is central to Intel’s broader turnaround efforts, aiming to recapture market leadership and solidify its position as a comprehensive compute platform provider.

The company recently revealed a new data center GPU, codenamed Crescent Island, alongside a rack-scale reference design based on its Gaudi 3 systems. These announcements highlight Intel’s commitment to addressing emerging and complex AI workloads, particularly in the critical areas of AI inference and agentic AI, which involves running AI models in real-time and across diverse environments.

The AI Battlefield: Gaudi 3’s Offensive Against Nvidia

The “AI wars” have intensified, with Nvidia currently holding an estimated 98% share of the data center GPU market. Intel’s Gaudi 3 AI accelerator is its primary weapon in this battle, directly challenging Nvidia’s dominant H100 chip. Intel claims significant performance advantages for Gaudi 3, including:

  • An average of 50% better inference performance compared to the Nvidia H100.
  • An average of 40% better power efficiency than the H100.
  • A significantly lower cost compared to the H100.

These claims are backed by design choices, including large high-bandwidth memory (HBM), an efficient architecture, and ample HBM capacity. Intel’s Gaudi 3 rack-scale systems are designed for real-time inferencing and can feature up to 64 AI accelerators per rack.

The company has secured major manufacturing partners for Gaudi 3, including Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo, and Super Micro Computer. New Gaudi customers and partners such as Bharti Airtel, Bosch, IBM, and NielsenIQ underscore the growing adoption of Intel’s AI hardware. Intel has been developing its Gaudi chips since its acquisition of Habana Labs in 2019.

Nvidia’s Response and the Broader Competitive Landscape

While Intel positions Gaudi 3 as a superior alternative to the H100, the competitive landscape is rapidly evolving. Nvidia’s Blackwell platform, announced to replace the H100, is expected to be available later this year. Nvidia touts Blackwell as four times faster than the H100, capable of running trillion-parameter large language models at up to 25 times less cost and energy. This advancement presents a substantial challenge to Gaudi 3’s competitive edge.

Beyond hardware, Nvidia’s proprietary CUDA software platform, with its extensive developer tools and libraries, provides a significant ecosystem advantage. Intel is working to counter this with an open-source software stack, aiming to foster broader adoption and flexibility.

Furthermore, while Intel emphasizes a cost advantage for Gaudi 3, the massive investments flowing into the generative AI market suggest that companies prioritize computing capabilities, speed, and capacity over price in their quest for a sustainable edge.

Beyond the Data Center: Core Ultra and Xeon 6+

Intel’s AI strategy extends beyond data centers to a comprehensive “AI everywhere” approach. The company is introducing new processors across its product lines, integrating specialized AI capabilities:

  • Core Ultra series 3 (code-named Panther Lake): Designed for AI PCs, gaming systems, and performance-intensive devices, these chips will begin shipping in consumer devices by the end of 2025. They are built on Intel’s next-generation 18A (2nm-class) process node, promising up to 15% higher performance per watt and 30% greater chip density compared to the Intel 3 process node. Panther Lake chips feature up to 16 new performance-cores (P-cores) and efficiency-cores (E-cores), delivering over 50% faster CPU performance, an Intel Arc GPU with up to 12 Xe cores providing over 50% faster graphics, and built-in AI acceleration with up to 180 platform TOPS (trillions of operations per second). These chips will also target edge computing applications like robotics, supported by a new Intel Robotics AI software suite.
  • Xeon 6+ (code-named Clearwater Forest): This server processor is set to arrive in the first half of 2026. Also based on the 18A process node, it is designed for hyperscale data centers, cloud infrastructure, and telecom networks. It boasts up to 288 efficiency-cores (E-cores), a 17% increase in instructions per cycle (IPC), and significant improvements in density, throughput, and power efficiency. These processors are particularly optimized for inferencing workloads, a less power-hungry process than AI model training.

Intel CTO Sachin Katti emphasized the shift towards “real-time, everywhere inference” driven by agentic AI, necessitating heterogeneous systems that align the right silicon with the right task, powered by an open software stack.

Intel’s Broader Turnaround Strategy and Financial Health

Intel’s aggressive AI push is a critical component of its broader turnaround strategy. This multi-faceted plan also includes developing a third-party foundry system to build chips for external customers, similar to rival TSMC (TSMC.BA). This initiative aims to regain lost market share in chip manufacturing prowess and diversify revenue streams. Concurrently, Intel is working to regain its leadership in the PC market, which remains its largest business segment.

Financially, Intel has experienced a volatile period. While Intel stock was up 84% year to date and 57% over the past 12 months as of October 2025, earlier in 2024, it faced setbacks, including a disappointing Q4 guidance and a reported $7 billion loss in its foundry segment in 2023. The company projects these foundry losses to expand before reaching break-even by 2027 and then profitability.

Intel has also attracted significant external support. In 2025, the Trump administration agreed to invest $8.9 billion in Intel, a move that could translate to roughly a 10% stake in the firm, as detailed in Intel’s official press release on intc.com. That same year, SoftBank agreed to invest $2 billion in the company. Furthermore, Nvidia and Intel have agreed to a collaboration to develop AI infrastructure and personal computing products, an announcement made by Nvidia on its newsroom in September 2025.
