Los Angeles is in crisis. Over the past few days, the city has been rocked by ICE raids, nightly protests, and the unprecedented deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines — all ordered by the Trump administration, and all without the consent of local or state officials. To help us make sense of the chaos, I spoke with LA Mayor Karen Bass, who’s found herself at the epicenter of a growing constitutional and humanitarian storm. We talked about everything from the lack of federal coordination and communication to the human toll these raids are taking on immigrant families, including parents too afraid to send their kids to school. Mayor Bass also addressed misleading images circulating on social media, why she thinks this federal intervention is a “stunt,” and how Angelenos will start to feel the absence of immigrant labor in very real, very personal ways.
