Indiana’s 14-0 romp feels historic, but until someone matches 2019 LSU’s 60-touchdown offense and five first-round picks, the GOAT crown remains in Baton Rouge.

The moment the clock hit zero in the Peach Bowl, the whispers turned into a roar: is Indiana the greatest college football team we’ve ever seen? A 63-10 obliteration of Illinois, a 14-0 record, and a date with Miami for the national title will do that.

But before we engrave the crown, 2019 LSU is clearing its throat.

The Burrow Benchmark: 5,671 yards that still stand alone

ESPN’s Greg McElroy floated the comparison first, noting Indiana’s balanced assault “has a little 2019 LSU to it.” The symmetry is tempting: both teams entered the playoff unbeaten, both steamrolled a Power-Five champ in the semis, both feel inevitable.

Yet the numbers slap back. Joe Burrow threw for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns—still the most prolific season by a Heisman winner in history. Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase combined for 3,320 receiving yards; both are now top-five NFL receivers. 14 Tigers heard their names called in the 2020 draft, five in the first round. That’s not dominance, that’s a hostile takeover of the sport.

Margin of victory only tells half the story

Indiana’s 31.5-point average margin dwarfs LSU’s 27.4, but the Tigers played four top-10 opponents and won those by 21, 27, 35 and 17. Their playoff run: 63-28 over Oklahoma, 42-25 over Clemson. Burrow alone threw for 956 yards and 12 TDs in those two games—numbers that look like a misprint.

Indiana’s defense is nastier, surrendering 12.1 points per game to LSU’s 21.9. Still, the 2019 Tigers never trailed in the fourth quarter and led by double digits in every second half. Their weakness—defensive youth—was cosmetic; their offense scored on 75 percent of red-zone trips, the highest rate since NCAA play-by-play data began in 2004.

2001 Miami and the 38-draft-pick empire

Narrow the lens to any era and the GOAT club gets crowded. 2001 Miami sent 38 players to the NFL draft, including 17 first-rounders over the next five classes. They beat Nebraska 37-14 in the Rose Bowl and crushed ranked foes Syracuse and Washington by a combined 124-7 in November. That roster had six All-Americans and a two-deep chart that started 17 future pros.

Indiana’s 2025 two-deep features one projected first-rounder—corner D’Angelo Ponds—and zero consensus All-Americans. The Hoosiers’ NFL pipeline is rising, but it’s a trickle compared to the 2001 Miami flood.

16-0: the ghost in the record books

If Indiana tops Miami, it will finish 16-0, matching 1894 Yale for the sport’s only perfect 16-win campaign. The Bulldogs outscored foes 485-13 and recorded 13 shutouts. Contemporary accounts praise their “steady and hard” style—early code for “they broke your will by halftime.”

Modern schedules are tougher, travel is farther, TV glare is hotter. Yet 16-0 would give Indiana the single-season wins record, a stat no spreadsheet can ignore. Championships are decided in January; legacies are forged in December comparisons.

The verdict—until Monday night changes everything

Indiana has earned the right to be measured against royalty. A 63-point win over a nine-win Illinois team is a signature statement. But crowning a new GOAT requires more than one highlight reel; it demands a body of work that reshapes how we define excellence.

Until Fernando Mendoza threads a Burrow-like playoff masterpiece, until the Hoosiers produce a five-first-round draft haul, until their offensive footprint spans 60 touchdowns, the 2019 Tigers remain the gold standard. Indiana can join the debate Monday night; LSU still owns the mic.
