From Pavlova to “Poison Thorny Flowers”: Ina Garten and Taylor Swift’s Unexpected Culinary Muse Moment

A charming anecdote from over a decade ago involving iconic chef Ina Garten and pop superstar Taylor Swift has resurfaced, with Garten hinting that their shared “day drinking” experience may have inspired a specific lyric in Swift’s new song, “CANCELLED!” This connection highlights a long-standing mutual admiration between the culinary legend and the pop superstar.

The worlds of gourmet cooking and global pop music have delightfully collided with a recent revelation from beloved chef Ina Garten. Known affectionately as the Barefoot Contessa, Garten, 77, recently teased the possibility that a decade-old shared moment with Taylor Swift, 35, might have directly inspired a lyric in Swift’s latest track, “CANCELLED!”

The song, featured on Swift’s October 2025 album, The Life of a Showgirl, includes the memorable lines: “Good thing I like my friends cancelled / I like ’em cloaked in Gucci and in scandal / Like my whiskey sour / And poison thorny flowers.” It’s the mention of the “whiskey sour” that stirred Garten’s memory and ignited excitement among fans.

The Fateful “Day Drinking” Encounter

According to Garten, the specific incident occurred more than a decade ago during a Food Network Magazine photo shoot in 2014. The two were in the midst of preparing a pavlova when the conversation turned to cocktails. Garten, a known enthusiast of the classic drink, mentioned her fondness for a whiskey sour.

“So what happened was we were on the shoot and we were making a pavlova together,” Garten recounted to People. “So we were putting this together, and I don’t know how it even came up, we were talking about cocktails. It was like 11 o’clock in the morning, and I said, my favorite cocktail’s a whiskey sour. And she said, ‘Oh, I’ve never had one.’”

Always prepared, Garten happened to have a pitcher of the concoction readily available in her refrigerator. Soon after, at a brisk 11:30 a.m., she served Swift her very first whiskey sour. The moment was so delightful that Swift reportedly exclaimed to her mother, Andrea Swift, “We’re day drinking!”

Reflecting on the experience, Garten, while unable to confirm if it directly influenced the song, expressed her sincere hope. “She inspires all of us, so I’m glad if I inspire her a little bit, that’d be great,” she shared, as reported by Parade.

“CANCELLED!” and the Art of Embracing Imperfection

The song “CANCELLED!” delves into Swift’s perspective on embracing friends who have faced public scrutiny and “cancellation” for various controversies. The lyrics suggest a defiant acceptance, with Swift herself acknowledging her own past experiences with public backlash.

This theme of loyalty and understanding resonates deeply within the pop culture landscape. The “whiskey sour” line, whether directly inspired by Garten or not, could symbolize a particular taste or preference that one is unashamed to enjoy, even when unconventional or controversial. It fits within the song’s larger narrative of embracing what you love despite external judgments.

A Decade of Mutual Admiration: Swift on Garten’s Enduring Influence

The admiration between these two influential women is far from a new development. Taylor Swift has openly praised Ina Garten on multiple occasions, crediting her with transforming her entire relationship with cooking.

During the Food Network Magazine’s celebration of Barefoot Contessa’s 20th anniversary in October 2022, Swift shared heartfelt sentiments about Garten’s impact:

  • “My most potent memories of Ina come from when I first discovered her TV show.”
  • “I was in my teens, and my life revolved around touring. On my rare days off at home, I barely ever cooked because it had always felt like a chore.”
  • “Watching Ina prepare a meal changed my perspective on cooking and reframed it as something relaxing.”
  • “She made cooking feel like self-care. Ever since, cooking has been my escape from stress and one of the only ways I can truly calm myself on a rough day. I’ll always be grateful to her for giving me that.”

This long-standing appreciation from Swift highlights the depth of Garten’s influence, extending beyond the kitchen to personal well-being and creative inspiration. The possibility of a “whiskey sour” lyric being born from their shared moment only adds another sweet layer to their unique and celebrated bond.
