‘Safe gun storage’ bill ready for Pritzker
Illinois gun owners would be required by law to lock up their firearms around anyone under 18 or who is considered a person prohibited to have a firearm with a bill that can now be sent to the governor’s desk.
Senate Bill 8, approved in the House late Wednesday, requires a firearm to be locked in a case unless it is within the owner’s control, including in vehicles. The measure also requires reporting lost or stolen firearms within 48 hours. Republicans promise there will be lawsuits.
Immigrants charged with ATM tampering
Three Venezuelan nationals said to be in the country illegally have been charged with ATM tampering at a bank in Edwardsville.
According to charging documents filed at the Madison County Circuit Court, security video from the bank showed three people opening the ATM panel with a key and then fleeing when the alarm went off.
Police said they found an unauthorized ATM key in the suspects’ car, along with multiple cell phones and computer equipment capable of overriding an ATM.
Pope license plates proposed
An Illinois lawmaker is proposing license plates to honor Pope Leo XIV.
A bill by state Rep. Martin McLaughlin would allow the Illinois Secretary of State’s office to issue commemorative Pope Leo license plates with some of the proceeds funding a pope statue near the state capitol building.
The plates would cost $27 in addition to the regular registration fee.
