The Lemonheads are keeping their long‑awaited comeback in full swing.
On Tuesday, the rock band released “The Key of Victory,” the latest single from their first new album in nearly 20 years. The track follows the previous releases of “Deep End” and “In the Margin,” which were released in May and late June, respectively.
The last time The Lemonheads put out new music was their self-titled album in 2006. Since then, they’ve released two covers albums, Varshons in 2009 and Varshons 2 in 2019.
“The Key of Victory” — co-written by the band’s frontman, Evan Dando and David Ashby — was recorded in London’s famous Abbey Road Studios. While Apollo Nove played the guitar, vocal harmonies were provided by Erin Rae. The music video, which was also released on Tuesday, has been produced by Sick Jim.
“It’s quiet, it’s b—hin’. It’s pretty and it’s modal,” Dando said about the track on the music video’s YouTube description. “I was trying to do like a Street Hassle vibe, you know?”
Formed in Boston by Dando, Ben Deily and Jesse Peretz in 1986, The Lemonheads rose to prominence in the 1990s with their melodic alt‑rock sound. They delivered memorable songs like “Into Your Arms” and a popular cover of “Mrs. Robinson,” originally by American folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel. Known for their guitar melodies, emotional and bittersweet lyrics and their laid‑back charm, they became staples during the era’s alternative scene.
Over the years, the band’s lineup and members have shifted frequently, with Dando remaining the band’s only constant member. Since 2005, Karl Alvarez and Bill Stevenson have rounded out the group, while past members have included Deily, Peretz, John Strohm, Juliana Hatfield, Vess Ruhtenberg and Devon Ashley.
On top of rolling out a new album titled Love Chant, releasing on Oct. 24 by Fire Records, The Lemonheads will be going on tour around Europe throughout August and September, with their first group stop at the Roadmender in Northampton, UK, on Aug. 14. After the new album is released, the rock band will hit the road again around the United States throughout November and December.
Fans can now listen to “The Key of Victory” and the rest of the band’s discography on all streaming platforms. The Lemonheads’ long-awaited album, Love Chant, will be released on Oct. 24.
