Beauty and the Beat, the debut album by the Go-Go’s, is celebrating its 44th anniversary this week, and singer Belinda Carlisle marked the occasion on Instagram.

In a post on Thursday, July 10, featuring the album’s iconic cover with the band members wearing nothing but white towels with their faces covered in cold cream, Carlisle wrote, “44 years ago this week…. The debut album of @officialgogos was released. What an incredible time it was. Seems like a dream … 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜.”

The album remains the first and only album by an all-female band that played their own instruments to top the album chart. Beauty and the Beat hit the top spot the week of March 6, 1982, and stayed there for six weeks.

The band, which included Carlisle on vocals, Jane Wiedlin on rhythm guitar, Charlotte Caffey of the Eyes on lead guitar, Kathy Valentine of the Textones on bass, and Gina Schock of the Baltimore band Miss Edie & the Eggs on drums, rose out of the Los Angeles punk rock scene of the late ‘70s. However, the Go-Go’s didn’t want to go the hardcore route.

“We didn’t really want to be a punk band,” Carlisle said in an interview for The Billboard Book of Number One Albums. “We wanted to play melodic pop, more like the Buzzcocks or one of those type bands.”

However, when the band first heard Beauty and the Beat, they were a bit shocked as the band’s punk influences had been airbrushed by producer Richard Gottehrer’s slick production. “We were all horrified,” Carlisle said. “We were used to sounding much rawer, the way we did in the clubs. Listening to this pop record at first was a little scary, but it grew on us.”

Fans shared their fond memories of the album in the comments on Instagram.

“Changed my life 😍,” wrote one fan.

“I hear it suddenly got very crazy for the LA punk girl – and a mixed up kid in Ohio fell madly in love with that girl dancing around in the fountain. That look… those eyes… that amazing voice…And she still has that same magic 💖🌹🌹🌹,” wrote another, referring to the scene in the video for “Our Lips Are Sealed” in which Carlisle and the other members of the band jumped into a fountain in Los Angeles.

“My favorite álbum! Timeless and fun 🙌🏼💃,” added another.
