Iconic ’70s Band Reveals Haunting Meaning Behind Hit Song: ‘Best Lyrics of All Time’ originally appeared on Parade.
Sometimes, it takes a while for something to really sink in. Whether you’re rereading a book or listening to your favorite song for the millionth time, there might be something that finally clicks. It’s a great feeling.
On Monday, July 28th, iconic ’70s rock band Pink Floyd took to TikTok to expose the true meaning of some of their best lyrics. While many always knew the song “Time” always had a haunting vibe, Roger Waters‘ explanation just drove it home.
‘Time’ was released in 1973 on Pink Floyd’s 8th album, The Dark Side of the Moon. The album itself is no doubt one of the best albums of all time, and this song is no exception.
The song explores the reality of life slipping by you unnoticed, which is something everyone can relate to. A week can feel like a lifetime, but suddenly you blink and it’s been five whole years! According to the caption, Roger Waters was thinking of the “quiet panic of wasted years.”
‘Time’ by Pink Floyd Is Such a Time-Honored Song
‘Time’ is a masterpiece all the way through, but one line in particular sticks with fans even 50 years after release: “No one told you where to run, you’ve missed the starting gun.” Ouch.
One fan called the tune some of the “best lyrics of all time.” Another fan, finally hit by how upsetting this song really is, said, “This is one of the songs you hear in your 30s and go… oh.”
Pink Floyd is known for their deep lyrics and hidden meanings, but this one might just take the cake. Maybe everyone needs to do something fun today to make up for it!
