Apple Passwords and 1Password

Password management got a big boost when Apple launched a new Passwords app in iOS 18, macOS 15, and its other software platforms. I use Apple Passwords every day, but there are still some missing features that send me back to 1Password often.

1Password supports categories of secure data that Apple Passwords does not

1Password lets users add many more categories of data than Apple Passwords supports. And it’s those additional data types that keep me regularly running back to 1Password.

In Apple’s app you can save passwords, passkeys, verification codes, and Wi-Fi info—that’s it. 1Password has a lot more versatility, and there are three specific data categories that keep me from fully dropping the app.

#1: Credit cards

I’ve stored info on my credit cards and debit cards inside 1Password for years. Unfortunately, there’s no such support in Apple Passwords.

In theory, Apple’s Wallet app should be able to fill the gap left by Passwords not supporting credit cards. However, even Wallet falls short here.

Other than my Apple Card, none of my credit cards offer their full details inside the Wallet app. All I see is a card’s last four digits. Thus, whenever I need to access credit card info, I still need to open 1Password.

#2: Bank accounts

Similarly, 1Password offers a convenient option to store bank account numbers and routing numbers. Apple Passwords does not.

I could open various banking apps and tap through to find the info I need, but I’ve grown so used to finding this info conveniently all in one spot: 1Password.

#3: Secure notes

Here is one area where Apple does better, but not because the Passwords app supports secure notes—rather, using Apple Notes is a decent alternative.

I could setup locked notes in the Notes app to hold the same sensitive info I currently have in 1Password. To be fair, Apple Notes is also where I could add credit card and banking info.

Maybe it’s just years of being conditioned by 1Password, but I would much rather keep all of this secure data together in one place: the Passwords app. At the very least, some sort of integration inside Passwords that shows select locked notes would be nice.

Apple Passwords and 1Password: wrap-up

For the most part, I’m a very happy Apple Passwords user. But I sure wish Apple expanded the possibilities for secure data you can store there. Until then, I’ll either keep relying on 1Password or else go all-in on locked notes inside Apple Notes. Neither is an ideal solution, but here’s hoping it’s only temporary.

What missing features make it hard for you to move from 1Password to Apple Passwords? Let us know in the comments.
