The black heron (Egretta ardesiaca) is found in the wetlands of Sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. It is part of the egret family, which is known for its graceful wading and its long legs, necks, and bills. The black heron, however, is known for its feeding behavior and how it forms a canopy over its prey to consume them. This black bird’s only coloration is their bright yellow irises and bright yellow or orange feet. Their broad black feathers create an ideal canopy that helps them catch their main prey: fish.

Among herons, this feeding behavior is unique. Most herons and egrets typically stand motionless and wait for prey to approach. This technique, known as canopy feeding, involves the heron spreading its wide wings to create an umbrella-like shadow over the water, concealing its prey. Typically, these birds walk slowly until they spot their meal. Once the heron spots its prey, it fully extends its wings to form the canopy. While the primary goal of this behavior is to catch prey, researchers are still studying its finer details. Researchers hypothesize that the umbrella effect attracts small fish seeking shelter. The canopy also provides better visibility by reducing the reflection on the water.

Although black herons are currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, the wetland habitats it depends on are increasingly threatened by drainage and urban expansion. Similar to other wading birds, herons require healthy wetlands and shallow water systems to hunt, breed, and thrive.

When ecosystems are altered, the balance shifts not only for herons but also for other species that depend on these habitats. The black heron exemplifies how animal behaviors are closely connected to their environment. Most notably, the canopy feeding technique is both majestic and unique, showcasing the heron’s remarkable adaptability.

To ensure these intricate behaviors are preserved, we must protect the aquatic habitats these birds rely on—not only for their survival, but also for the insights species like the black heron offer about survival, resilience, and adaptation.
