Rust, the Western starring Alec Baldwin, is in theaters now after the October 2021 accidental shooting on set that resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins
The film is dedicated to Hutchins, honoring her in its end credits
Those credits include a quote Hutchins often said on set, which actor Josh Hopkins said was a guiding light when Rust resumed filming
Rust made headlines for the accidental death of its cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during production in New Mexico in October 2021. Those wondering how the Alec Baldwin-led Western, now in theaters nearly four years later, honors the late cinematographer should stick around for its end credits.
Upon Rust’s conclusion, the movie cuts to black and a title card appears: “… for Halyna.” Next is a quote from the filmmaker: “’What can we do to make this better?’ – Halyna Hutchins, Cinematographer, A.S.C.”

Proceeding with the credits, Joel Souza appears first as director, followed by “cinematography by Halyna Hutchins” — an early placement for a director of photographer, whose name typically appears later. Hutchins’ credit is followed by “cinematography by Bianca Cline,” recognizing the DP who took over filming Rust after the tragic accident.

On Oct. 21, 2021 during rehearsals for a Rust scene, a prop gun containing a live round held by Baldwin went off, killing Hutchins and injuring Souza. As Baldwin, 67, and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed faced involuntary manslaughter charges and lawsuits from production crew members, Souza resumed filming in Montana in 2023.
Hutchins’ widower Matthew — named an executive producer on the film following the incident — filed a wrongful death suit against Baldwin which has not been fully resolved despite its October 2022 settlement.
Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter trial in New Mexico in July 2024 ended by being dismissed with prejudice after his attorneys argued that prosecutors had buried evidence. Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in March 2024 and is currently serving an 18-month prison sentence.

Baldwin leads Rust as Harland Rust, a rugged outlaw in 1882 Wyoming springing a boy accused of murder (Patrick Scott McDermott) — who accidentally shot his neighbor — from jail. Law enforcement including a Marshall played by Josh Hopkins and a bounty hunter played by Travis Fimmel pursue the pair south.
“I’m really excited for people to see Halyna’s work,” Hopkins told PEOPLE. “It’s the wish of her family that this movie be finished, and they’re excited for the world to see what an incredible artist she was.”
The Hutchins quote included in Rust’s credits about making every scene better “inspired everyone constantly,” added the actor, 54.
“There was a sense amongst everyone that now we had a specific mission, and that was to honor her every day, and come in ready to work and prepared the way she was every day… To honor her was at the forefront of every decision we made.”
Rust is in select theaters and available on digital.
