For spring 2024, Miuccia Prada pronounced the paracord cool. In her prep- and surf-inspired Miu Miu collection, she showed thong sandals with leather bottoms and paracords in lieu of laces and bags featuring paracord keychains and extra straps—all of which the brand has continued to sell through the spring and summer of 2025. Miu Miu even used paracord as laces in a collaboration with New Balance, which debuted that same season.

For the uninitiated, a paracord is a kind of lightweight yet ultrastrong nylon rope often used in outdoor activities. Consistent with Mrs. Prada’s renowned ability to subvert convention, she has single-handedly caused fashion fans across the country to reconsider the sporty rope. Not only that, but she’s spawned a larger movement among the industry and its consumers that began last year and is still going strong.

This March, Dorsey, a DTC brand founded by Meg Strachan that specializes in lab-grown diamonds, released its own interpretation of the paracord. The label just recently released a second iteration dubbed Paracord II, complete with necklaces, bracelets, and anklets with a bolo-style fastening and various placements of diamonds. The sporty setting of ultraluxe stones offers a similar tongue-in-cheek energy to Miu Miu’s clash of high and low.

Strachan is not alone. Veronica Beard offers a paracord bag strap and a Carmina cord wrap sandal, though most sizes are sold out. This past March, Aritzia and Sperry collaborated on boat shoes (another popular Miu Miu release) with interchangeable laces: leather in a corresponding color or brightly hued paracords. Roxanne Assoulin offers a paracord necklace, and Dezso by Sara Beltran makes a bracelet.

TikTok, of course, has its own take. Young creators are turning the expensive trend into a DIY prompt. @janeybonbon bought paracord and keychain fastenings from Amazon. She filmed herself attempting to resurrect the summer-camp knowledge of weaving lanyards—and it worked. I have to say, the result is pretty impressive. If you’ve forgotten the technique, fear not. @anghpark will walk you through it in a similar video, even showing you how to cauterize the ends. In fact, in most of these videos, the narrators admit to watching many, many YouTube videos about square or box knots, the technique necessary to achieve the desired result.

@julesthelawyer tries out the bracelet. @belletoldyou laces paracord into her Puma sneakers in the manner of the Miu Miu x New Balance collab. @itsyourgirlsamanthaa shows us how to do the same with her boat shoes. “I think Miu Miu really inspired us all,” she says.

The 2025 edition of the Miu Miu Riviere sandal retails for $925 on the brand’s website. The keychain, for $460 and up. The bracelet (which many wear as a bag charm) clocks in at $340. You can buy 50 feet of paracord rope at Home Depot for $5.48—or $0.11 a foot. A set of 24 colors, with 10 feet of each, costs $12.99 on Amazon.

The DIY nature of it all sparks something nostalgic in me. It feels reminiscent of going to thrift stores as a teen to re-create runway looks I could only dream of, cutting denim shorts or splatter painting T-shirts. The earnestness, in my opinion, takes a layer of the dupe-ness off.

Mrs. Prada is famous for sprinkling the odd, seemingly out-of-place element into her runway shows, letting something trickle bottom-up and then top-down again. In the past, she has stamped her triangle on what looks like a men’s undershirt. She has shown purposefully wrinkled clothes and swapped swimwear for clothing. She’s in on the joke when she reinterprets zeitgeisty—or extremely un-zeitgeisty—items, clashing luxury with utility. And often it’s with things you might have. You can buy an old bullet bra, like the ones she added to her Fall 2025 collection, or add a pair of boxers beneath your skirt. But the Miu Miu label? That you have to pay for.
