A historic East Coast blizzard, named Winter Storm Hernando by The Weather Channel, is slamming areas around the mid-Atlantic and New England with heavy snow and high winds from Virginia and Delaware to Massachusetts and Maine, including New York City.
The highest snow total so far is 27.5 inches in Remsenburg-Speonk, New York, with other notable totals including 26.5 inches in N. Stonington, Connecticut, and 25.5 inches in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.
Snowfall
Dozens of locations have already picked up over a foot of snow from the Delmarva Peninsula to New England, with snowfall rates up to 3 inches per hour observed on Long Island.
The storm has also been accompanied by lightning strikes at times, and blizzard conditions have been confirmed by the National Weather Service in multiple locations, including Boston and Newark, New Jersey.
State Snowstorm Records In Jeopardy
Hernando could flirt with, if not break, all-time snowstorm records in a few states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.
According to NOAA, the standing records are: 50 inches in Middletown, Connecticut, March 12-14, 1888; 29 inches near Greenwood, Delaware, Feb. 6-7, 2010; 43.9 inches in Ipswich, Massachusetts, Feb. 6-8, 1978; 34 inches in Oak Ridge Reservoir, New Jersey, Dec. 26-27, 1947; 86.5 inches in E. Aurora, New York, Nov. 18-20, 2014; and 38 inches in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, from Feb. 7-8, 1978.
Peak Winds
The peak reliable wind gust so far is a 98 mph gust in northern Cape Cod at a weather station 88 feet above the ground in Wellfleet, with at least a dozen other locations clocking at least 60 mph wind gusts, including Boston’s Logan Airport, New York’s JFK Airport, and Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Blizzard conditions were confirmed at dozens of locations along the Northeast coast, and the low-pressure system has intensified rapidly enough to be deemed a bomb cyclone.
