Netflix has a knack for making romantic TV comedies into household names. From the Regency romance series Bridgerton to the lovably cringeworthy show Emily in Paris, the streaming platform’s track record is pretty impeccable. Now, get ready for Netflix to add a new rom-com to its roster.
This summer, Lena Dunham will return to television with Too Much, a brand-new series starring Hacks’s Meg Stalter and The White Lotus’s Will Sharpe. Fans of Dunham’s generation-defining HBO dramedy, Girls, will likely find common ground with Too Much, which follows an American expat in London navigating her career and relationships. Ahead, everything we know about the show so far.
Too Much will drop on Netflix this summer.
The show will debut globally on the streaming platform on July 10.
The cast is stacked.
Meg Stalter, who plays Kayla Schaefer on the Emmy-winning HBO show Hacks, will lead Too Much as Jessica, a New Yorker fresh on the heels of a devastating breakup. Her newfound singledom prompts Jessica to accept a job offer in London, where she meets Felix, played by Will Sharpe, with whom she forms an instant connection.
In addition to Stalter and Sharpe, the show also includes performances from Naomi Watts, Rita Wilson, Rhea Perlman, Emily Ratajkowski, Adwoa Aboah, Michael Zegan, Janicza Bravo, Richard E. Grant, and Andrew Rannells.
The show is about a New Yorker who moves to London.
Not so unlike the premise of Emily in Paris, Too Much will revolve around another American who swaps her big city life for a European visa. The official synopsis reads:
Jessica (Megan Stalter) is a New York workaholic in her mid-thirties, reeling from a broken relationship that she thought would last forever and slowly isolating everyone she knows. When every block in New York tells a story of her own bad behaviour, the only solution is to take a job in London, where she plans to live a life of solitude like a Bronte sister. But when she meets Felix (Will Sharpe) – a walking series of red flags – she finds that their unusual connection is impossible to ignore, even as it creates more problems than it solves. Now they have to ask themselves: do Americans and Brits actually speak the same language? From the creator of Girls and the producers of Love Actually, Too Much is an ex-pat rom-com for the disillusioned who wonder if true love is still possible, but sincerely hope that it is.
Lena Dunham is the showrunner.
Eight years after the Girls series finale aired, Dunham is back at the helm of a television series that promises more razor-sharp and hilarious commentary on womanhood, love, and friendships. Partnering with Luis Felber, Dunham acts as Too Much’s writer, director, and executive producer.
Although Dunham starred in Girls while simultaneously writing and directing on the hit show, she doesn’t necessarily plan on getting in front of the camera for Too Much. “I was not willing to have another experience like what I’d experienced around Girls at this point in my life,” she revealed in an interview with The New Yorker. “Physically, I was just not up for having my body dissected again. It was a hard choice, not to cast [Megan Stalter]—because I knew I wanted Meg—but to admit that to myself.” She added, “I used to think that winning meant you just keep doing it and you don’t care what anybody thinks. I forgot that winning is actually just protecting yourself and doing what you need to do to keep making work.”
The first-look photos are promising.
On May 12, Netflix released the first official Too Much stills—and they’re a colorful glimpse at what’s to come. The images capture our leading lady in an electric wardrobe, from a psychedelic fur-trimmed coat to a cotton candy pink dog pouch, as well as Sharpe’s Felix looking brooding in a slouchy leather jacket.
