Harrison Ford made a rare comment about his “dear friend” Carrie Fisher more than eight years after she died.
While speaking to Variety in an interview published on Wednesday, July 30, Ford, 83, looked back on filming the original Star Wars movies with Mark Hamill and Fisher. Ford appeared in the beloved movies as Han Solo, while Hamill, 73, played Luke Skywalker and Carrie portrayed Princess Leia.
“I had a special relationship with both of them. Carrie had a very inspired wit and very special manner,” he said. “She’s also very smart, very funny. Both of them were dear friends — are dear friends.”
Fisher died at the age of 60 in December 2016 after she suffered a heart attack. After her passing, Ford expressed his sadness by saying in a statement, “Carrie was one-of-a-kind … brilliant, original. Funny and emotionally fearless. She lived her life, bravely.”
Ford previously paid tribute to Fisher when he spoke at Hamill’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in March 2018. “When thinking about today, I was really sorry that we don’t have the other member of our trio here to celebrate with us,” the Fugitive actor told the crowd at the time. “But I feel her presence.”

In addition to making a rare comment about Fisher, Ford also looked back at his role of Han Solo during his interview with Variety. He portrayed the character in A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Return of the Jedi (1983), The Force Awakens (2015) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019), as well as the 1979 Star Wars Holiday Special.
He admitted that “didn’t really know whether there was going to be another film when we started” the first Star Wards movie.
“And because I didn’t know whether there would be another film — and because I only had the script from the first one to consider — I didn’t sign the sequel deal, which turned out to be to all of our advantage,” Ford recalled of the franchise’s success.
