Following his acclaimed turn on The Handmaid’s Tale, Max Minghella appears to have his sights on the DCU.
The Emmy-nominated actor, 39, is in talks to star in the upcoming superhero movie Clayface, which will hit theaters on September 11, 2026, according to Deadline.
A deal hasn’t closed yet, the outlet added, but when it’s finalized, Minghella would join Tom Rhys Harries — who has the title role in the James Watkins-directed film — and Mickey 17 standout Naomi Ackie.
Clayface is widely known by DC fans as one of Batman’s villains in the classic comic books, an actor who turned to crime and took on the identity of a role he once portrayed in a horror movie, as Deadline noted. Clayface has appeared in DC series, animated projects, videos games and other media over the years.
James Gunn and Peter Safran are producing Clayface the movie along with The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. The Life of Chuck director Mike Flanagan wrote the first draft of the screenplay, Deadline reports, with additional drafts by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Hossein Amini (The Wings of a Dove and Drive).
Minghella was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for The Handmaid’s Tale at the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2021. On the big screen, he has tackled supporting roles in hits such as The Social Network and The Ides of March. Minghella also directed the movies Teen Spirit and Shell, the latter having premiered at TIFF last year, as Deadline noted.
Gunn’s summer blockbuster Superman has already earned $579 million at the global box office. DC Studios’ second season of the John Cena-led Peacemaker — which Gunn, 59, created — is premiering Aug. 21 on HBO Max.
Hulu dropped The Handmaid’s Tale series finale on May 27, which featured surprises that had fans losing it. One in particular — spoiler alert — was the unexpected appearance of throwback star Alexis Bledel as Emily, the old pal of series protagonist June (played by Elisabeth Moss).
