It’s been roughly five years since audiences around the world managed to experience the filmed adaptation of Hamilton on Disney+.
But as Lin-Manuel Miranda’s popular Broadway show celebrates its 10th anniversary, the award-winning actor, songwriter and musician has officially unveiled Hamilton’s long-awaited debut to theaters across the nation.
Appearing on a recent episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the 45-year-old Miranda discussed Hamilton’s lasting legacy in the world of pop culture, as well as revealing the movie’s upcoming release to celebrate the show’s 10th anniversary.
“I have an announcement!” Miranda enthusiastically told host Jimmy Fallon. “So, tomorrow is the 10-year anniversary of Hamilton, and we’ve been celebrating all year. But we have one more way to celebrate.”
“We filmed most of the original cast performing in Hamilton in 2016 and always wanted to release it theatrically,” he continued. “But then the pandemic hit, and so we decided to release it on streaming so everyone could see it at home whenever they wanted.”
Five years after its initial debut on Disney+, however, Miranda has confirmed that Hamilton’s long-delayed theatrical release will soon become a reality early next month.
“September 5, you will be able to see Hamilton in movie theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico,” the In the Heights creator said.
Since premiering in New York City’s Off-Broadway theater district in 2015, Hamilton quickly became one of the most talked-about shows of the 21st century yet, its fame and instantaneous popularity rivaling other iconic productions like The Phantom of the Opera or Wicked before it.
Following successful theatrical productions in practically every corner of the globe, Disney formally released a filmed version of the musical, initially planned for release in October, 2021.
Though the 2020 pandemic ultimately upended those plans, Hamilton‘s upcoming release to theaters finally completes a project Miranda has been avidly supportive of since its inception in 2016.
