Hamilton will hit theaters in September in honor of its 10th anniversary, creator and original star Lin-Manuel Miranda announced on Tuesday, Aug. 5

The theatrical release will come just over five years after Hamilton became available to stream for the first time on Disney+
Hamilton is entering a new room where it happens: the movie theater!
In honor of the hit Broadway musical’s 10th anniversary on Wednesday, Aug. 6, creator and original star Lin-Manuel Miranda stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to discuss the show’s legacy and some of his favorite memories from its early days.
He also revealed some big news: Hamilton will be hitting domestic theaters next month, following a previous streaming release in July 2020.
“We filmed most of the original cast performing in Hamilton in 2016 and always wanted to release it theatrically. But then the pandemic hit, and so we decided to release it on streaming so everyone could see it at home,” Miranda, 45, told host Jimmy Fallon on the show Tuesday, Aug. 5.
“But, Sept. 5, you will be able to see Hamilton in movie theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico,” he continued, adding that tickets are on sale as of Wednesday.

Miranda’s big announcement comes just under two months after the original Hamilton cast reunited for a special performance during the 78th Tony Awards in New York City, on June 8.
The creator and star of the Tony-winning show was joined by more than two dozen other members of the original cast, including Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Anthony Ramos, Christopher Jackson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Jonathan Groff and Ariana DeBose.
The tribute kicked off with Miranda and Odom Jr., 44, performing a snippet from the song “Non-Stop.” Then, the show-stopping performance continued with a melody of tracks from the beloved Hamilton score, including “My Shot,” “The Schuyler Sisters,” “You’ll Be Back,” “The Room Where it Happens” and “History Has Its Eyes on You.”
Speaking to PEOPLE on the red carpet ahead of the ceremony, Goldsberry, 54, recalled their reunion to rehearse the performance being an emotional affair.
“I walked in there, and every single person that came into the room, just tears of joy bubbled up from my soul,” she said. “We group hugged a million times. We just love each other so much.”

Another big way Hamilton‘s 10th anniversary is standing out? The fact that Odom Jr. is set to reprise his role as Aaron Burr for a limited 12-week run at New York City’s Richard Rodgers Theatre, from Sept. 9 through Nov. 23.
Odom Jr. earned both a Leading Actor in a Musical Tony Award for the part, and a Grammy Award for being a principal soloist on the show’s original cast recording.
As the actor and singer said in a statement shared with PEOPLE this past April, “Returning to Hamilton is a deeply meaningful homecoming.”

Hamilton began previews performances on Broadway in July 2015, officially opening on Aug. 6, 2015. Odom Jr., who also played Burr during its workshops and Off-Broadway run, initially made his final bow in the musical in July 2016.
