There’s never any shortage of stars on the Met Gala red carpet, but occasionally there’s a particular rarity, even on such a unique night. Such was the case with actress Halle Berry, who appeared at the gala in a long, curve hugging gown featuring alternating transparent and sequined black panels and a black satin bolero—a reference to the night’s tailoring theme with hints of pinstripes and tuxedo styling. She accented the style with Cartier jewelry.
Keyed to the upcoming Costume Institute show Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, tonight’s “Tailored for You” dress code was designed to nod to the exhibition’s focus on the history of Black style through the lens of men’s fashion in Europe and in the Americas from the 18th century to the modern era. Specifically, the exhibit emphasizes the Black dandy, which the show’s guest curator Monica L. Miller described as “someone, often a man, who is extremely devoted to aesthetics and approached it as a lifestyle.”
This year marks only the second time that Berry has walked the gala red carpet. The last time was almost a decade ago, when she made her debut at the event at the Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between exhibition in 2017.
For that occasion, Berry wore a black Versace gown that was years ahead of the major transparent trend which she returned to this evening (and which dominated last year’s gala red carpet.) The halter-neck style flowed down into a dramatic train of black and gold petals.
