The Cannes Film Festival was serious about those dress code rules—yes, even if you’re Halle Berry.
As readers know, the film festival changed its dress code rules at the last minute, just as the stars began trailing into the French Riviera for the grand event. The new guidelines state that “nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival” due to “decency reasons.” An in the spirit of decency, there should also be no excessive drama in the form of “voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted.”
For a red carpet known for its grandeur and excessive glamour, it was a big change to spring on attendees mere hours before the premieres and carpets were set to begin. Berry, evidently was already packed and ready to go when the rulebook dropped, and before she realized not all of her ensembles would make the cut.
The actor revealed that she was forced to swap her original Gaurav Gupta gown for a Jacquemus Spring/Summer 2025 look in order to attend tonight’s opening ceremony.
Anyone who doesn’t adhere to the dress code, the festival said, will be prohibited access to the event.
“I had an amazing dress by [Gaurav] Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it’s too big of a train,” Berry said in an interview with Variety. “I’m not going to break the rules. The nudity part is also probably a good rule.”
Of course, her second option—a black-and-white striped halter dress with a very sensible silhouette—was still lovely.
The dress code rules were updated this year in accordance with French law, the festival said. “This year, the Cannes Film Festival has made explicit in its charter certain rules that have long been in effect. The aim is not to regulate attire per se, but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet, in accordance with the institutional framework of the event and French law,” a statement from the festival reads.
