When the Cannes Film Festival announced new dress code requirements shortly before 2025’s star-studded event, some of its A-list attendees were left scrambling to find new Cannes outfits that didn’t break its new anti-nudity and anti-train rules. Case in point: Halle Berry, who stepped out in a tweed mini skirt suit at Cannes on May 13 as she revealed she was forced to make a last-minute dress change. Speaking with reporters at the Cannes Jury Press conference, the Catwoman actress shared that she’d had to sartorially pivot as she was no longer able to wear the Gaurav Gupta gown she’d planned for the opening night gala without breaking rules.
Wearing a black-and-white mini skirt suit in a preppy tweed print, Berry showed off her legs with the set’s short hemline. Featuring a 3D ruffled collar around her neck and a row of bedazzled buttons running down the front, Berry’s fitted jacket featured flared details at her wrists and sleeves. Her matching skirt, which ended a few inches above her knees, also had a ruffled flounce at the bottom and showed off her peep-toe black leather heels.

The Never Let Go actress wore her caramel-highlighted brunette bob in a chic side-parted bob with metallic rose gold eyeshadow and a matching lip as she posed during the Cannes Jury photocall. Per Variety, Berry revealed how Cannes Film Festival’s new dress code rules had forced her to change her outfit for the evening’s opening night gala.
“I had an amazing dress by Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it’s too big of a train,” Berry told reporters, adding “I’m not going to break the rules.” However, the star revealed that she’s not opposed to the new requirements, adding, “The nudity part is also probably a good rule.”

Despite swapping her outfit to avoid the new rule against “excessively voluminous” clothing, the actress still managed to incorporate unexpectedly sculptural silhouettes into her look as she stepped out in a black-and-white striped side boob-baring dress for the evening’s red carpet. Keeping her same glam from before, Berry’s sleeveless dress featured a gathered dress in the back with a mini ruffled pink petticoat that peeped out from under her high-low gown.

The striped design of Berry’s Cannes dress appeared to be a subtle (yet slightly more modest) nod to the custom black sequined LaQuan Smith naked dress that she wore to the 2025 Met Gala. The actress turned heads on May 5 in the plunging design, which featured alternating stripes of black sequined material and sheer black mesh. A black cropped tuxedo jacket, a multi-watt diamond necklace, and a black fascinator finished off her ode to this year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
