Hailee Steinfeld is reflecting on a Met Gala beauty mishap.
In the Friday, May 9, issue of her newsletter Beau Society, the actress, 28, opened up about her most memorable Met Gala look in a section where subscribers can submit questions.
“You were there, G!” the Sinners actress replied to her friend Greer, who asked the question. “The year I wore Iris van Herpen (I think it was 2021) was a fave. I wore this blonde wig and nobody recognized me! I was in full conversation with people who’ve had me over for dinner, and they didn’t know they were talking to me. Later, they told me, “Dude, I had no idea that was you.” Strange but fun!”
The star also recalled struggling to remove the icy blonde wig, saying, “Greer, remember getting back to our hotel room (it was like 2am) and trying to get that dang wig off my head!? I still have the seven-minute video of us trying to contain our laughter because that baby was cemented to my scalp. We couldn’t rip it — it’s this beautiful, handmade, lacefront wig — but we were delusionally tired and just wanted to go to bed.”
Steinfeld revealed the surprising method that ended up doing the trick. “Eventually, we went to the minibar… vodka breaks down wig glue,” she said.

At the 2021 Met Gala, Steinfeld surprised fans by trading her usual brunette locks for a platinum bob and light eyebrows to match. The star took the Met Museum steps in a glittering beige Iris Van Herpen dress with petal-shaped panels and matching Jimmy Choo platforms.
The actress is a Met Gala veteran, having made her debut in 2011 wearing a lace-embroidered asymmetrical dress by Stella McCartney. Her 2021 appearance marked her 10th time at the star-studded event.

Another subscriber asked Steinfeld to share some of her favorite looks from this year’s Met Gala, though the actress did not attend.
“I thought this year’s theme was so cool,” Steinfeld replied. “I loved Zoe Saldaña and Mona Patel in Thom Browne — the whole Thom Browne table killed it. Rihanna, of course. Colman Domingo. Also, it didn’t really fit the theme as much as others, but I loved Sofia Richie’s dress.”
The 2025 Met Gala, which took place on Monday, May 5, had the theme of “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” The event and corresponding Costume Institute exhibit take inspiration from guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, which explores “the Black dandy as both a concept and an identity signifier.”
